At times happy as you are blessed with some unique capabilities of which men are not…
Sometimes burdened because you may have more responsibilities to fulfill compared to your counterpart.
Anxious sometimes as you undergo many changes physically and mentally in life…
Undoubtedly, being a woman in sometimes not very easy. Physically, they face many changes in their lifespan requiring them to be careful enough. Research says women face more health issues compared to men.
Here, I would like to delve some deeper into oral health issues that may perplex women at different stages of their life. Actually, their unique hormonal changes make them more susceptible to mint dental problems. Hormonal changes affect body’s immunity; alter blood supply to gums resulting in formation of plaque and other such issues.
So, women need to be extra careful about their oral hygiene especially in these five stages of their life:
Puberty
When girls hit puberty, levels of progesterone and estrogen increase. This results in more flow of blood to gums causing them to red, swollen and tender. Gums may also bleed during flossing or brushing.
Menstrual Cycle
During menstrual cycle also, hormone levels increase particularly progesterone. Women may feel different problems including swollen or bleeding gums, plaque, mouth odor, swollen salivary glands, and sores also.
Menstrual gingivitis is also one of the common problems. It is bacterial attack in mouth and if not treated properly, it may even lead to tooth lose.
Use of Contraceptives
You must have heard of different side effects of these pills, oral health being one of these. As these pills contain progesterone, popping them up increases its level in body. As per the Academy of General Dentistry, women using these medicines are 50 percent more prone to gingivitis and other tooth related problems.
Pregnancy
It’s the stage which brings substantial change in hormones. Usually from 2nd to 8th month, you may feel that your mouth has become a disaster area with frequent tooth bleeding while brushing. You may also feel pain and redness in gums. In 1st trimester, pregnancy gingivitis is one of the common problems which may need doctor’s help. Morning sickness also aggravates problems as vomiting contains an acid responsible for tooth erosion.
This is the reason dentists recommend frequent cleaning sessions for pregnant women. But before taking that, you should consult your gynecologist first.
Menopause
Again, different problems may occur at this stage. Some women feel burning sensation, some feel tenderness and pain in gums, some experience redness and bleeding… cases may be different. Also, dry mouth is one of the common complaints in this stage.
Decline in estrogen level enhances the danger of loss of bone density. If it occurs in jaw, it may lead to tooth loss.
So, every woman has to pass through these stages in life and most of them face these problems also. Greater awareness and care on your part may reduce your issues to an extent.
Let’s discuss what you can do.
• Visit Mint dental regularly for checkup.
• Make sure that you mention the stage you are in before taking any dental treatment. For instance, if you are pregnant, you should mention it to your doctor before undertaking any dental treatment.
• Take care of oral hygiene. Brush and floss teeth properly at least twice a day.
• Have nutritious diet.
• Before taking medication like oral contraceptives etc, ask about the side effects.
Be informed, be cautious. An understanding of oral health issues in different stages of life will help you out in taking right steps towards prevention!
