The Himchari National Park is famous as a bird watcher's pleasure dome. You can spot here more than 250 avian species. Hirundo rustica, Cypsiurrus parvus and Acridotheres fuscus are some of the most common species to be found here. You will find a large number of lizards and frogs in the forest and grasslands. Herds of elephants and other wildlife species are also easily available in these tracks.
The Himchari National Park is a beautiful tropical rain forest which is protected and maintained. The park is home to high forest, low forest and grasslands with several species of trees. The Himchari Natural Park features more than 50 species of trees including Grewia microcos, Dipterocarpus turbinatus, Vitex pedurcularis and Pterospermum acerifolium. The forest area is home to more than twenty types of important herbs including the rare Swintonia floribunda, Curculigo recurvata and Alpinia nigra. A waterfall increases the natural beauty of the park.
The forest area is home to leopards and an agreement with the United States is
initiating induction of tigers in to the forest areas. The Himchari National Park does not have any inter-tidal habitats. This is an interesting fact because the Bay of Bengal is not far away from the park. You can plan a trip for a day to the park from Chittagong conveniently as Cox's Bazar is connected by air from Chittagong.
For more Wildlife in Chittagong, you can travel to the Teknaf Game Reserve situated at Damdamia in the south of Cox's Bazar. It was established in 1983 under the Wildlife Act of 1973 and it is one of the five protected areas where the Forest Department has initiated the co-management approach. This game reserve is home to a wide variety of wildlife species especially elephants. Currently it covers an area of 11,615 hectares which makes it the third largest protected areas after Sunderbans and Pablakhali Wildlife Sanctuaries.
