Many people believe that incorporating search engine optimization techniques is all they need to bring in customers. Although being on the first page of Google will bring in visitors, conversion isn't determined by your page ranking. It is nice to be on the first page - but you should keep these things in mind when determining your priorities.
Keywords must be relevant to what you have to offer. Even if your business is on the first page of Google, if you can't offer customers what they're looking for, then you won't convert. Make sure that your keywords and your content match your brand and products. You should also be sure to offer content that is helpful and useful to users, so they'll stick around and hopefully become customers. Even if you don't fully optimize your site, make sure your content and your products are in demand, and you will find yourself successful.
Be active and reputable in online communities. You want to make your presence known to those in your field and in the market for your products. It is important to make yourself visible on social networking sites (such as Facebook and Twitter) as well as sites that cater to your industry. Participate in discussions, talk to other users and business owners, blog and support other users' blogs; all these things come together to build your online reputation and make you known to others. If you can get people to support and promote you, then you will gain trust and rapport from other users too.
Find ways to backlink to drive traffic to your site. Again, being on the first page of Google isn't going to hurt you, but if you're selling something very specific, then there is a chance that you won't reach your entire audience. Whether you can or can't reach your entire audience, you should find sites to offer backlinks so people, not just search engines, will find your site. You can include links in your signatures (in your e-mails and forum posts or comments), at the end of blogs and articles, or on online directories that cater to your field. It helps for search engines to see your links - but be sure to think beyond SEO as well.
Although it may seem difficult to keep up, you will find that all the time and effort is worth it. By all means continue to optimize your sites for search engines, but be sure not to solely focus on just that. You want to convert your visitors to customers, after all. You can always contact an e-commerce provider for more information about SEO practices and marketing for your e-commerce business.
