We've all been there. We're looking to purchase something online, but we're not sure which company to buy from. We've never even heard of any companies that sell what we want. So, we jump onto the computer and Google the item that we're looking for. A page of companies come up along with some reviews. We click on the reviews and start reading. To our surprise, we find that every review is bad.

Negative. The company that we're reading about has been slated. We move onto the next company and its the same thing. Soon, we decide to just pick one and check with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). We check the BBB and find they are giving the company a bad rating too. We start over until we find a company that the BBB gives a good rating.
Can we trust this? Is the BBB's system an accurate one for ranking companies?
When answering this, the first thing you need to remember is that the BBB doesn't take into account the number of customers/orders placed versus the number of complaints. They don't consider the ratio. For example, if a company processes over 150,000 orders in a year and has 30 complaints in one year-that's a good ratio. In fact, it totals to 0.0002. But, if you have 30 complaints with the BBB you will have a bad ranking. Sounds absurd? It is.
That's why it's important to read both good and bad reviews before you place an order with any company. By reading good and bad reviews, you can decide for yourself about the company in question rather than counting on the BBB's poor ranking system that really doesn't work.
If you see a company's reviews and testimonials page and they have, say, 100 reviews and 10 of them are bad, it's pretty safe to say that the company is a good company. This is because of the ratio factor and the fact that most people don't take the time out to write a good review. If they are angry, they will write a bad review. But, generally, unless the company was exceptional, good reviews are hardly ever written.
Reading good and bad reviews is essential before deciding on whether or not you should buy from a company. It should be the first step to reviewing a company before you make a purchase. Weigh your options carefully and look for companies that have a good ratio to back them.
The BBB is not recommended for determining if you should use a company for the simple fact that their system just doesn't work. It is good for determining if a company is fraudulent, but that's the extreme. For seeing if a company is top-notch, stick with reading the reviews and testimonials on the company's website, but be sure that they are posting both good and bad reviews so that you get an accurate survey of the company.
