Drug testing is a classic and simple way for businesses to ensure their employees are not using illegal drugs. Drug testing isn't known to be an inexpensive venture, but in most cases, the results heavily outweigh the cost.
Drug testing promotes safety in the workplace. Think about your field of work in this way: certain types of jobs are extremely dangerous for employees to perform even when they are completely alert and sober. There are many different tools, appliances, and items in the workplace that should be handled with care. Factory workers need to be alert in order to operate fork lifts, just as deli workers need to be sober in order to handle sharp knives, ovens, and slicers. Regularly testing employees for drug use will ensure that they are not arriving to work and putting their lives, as well as the lives of others, in danger.
It eliminates problems down the line. Many companies and businesses drug test potential hires in an effort to stomp out possible issues before they actually happen. A person that seems great during an interview could easily turn out to be unreliable and dangerous in the workplace due to their drug use. Giving a potential hire a drug test could prevent having to later compensate the employee for an injury or hire a replacement employee.
Drug testing is often mandatory. While some businesses have the right to choose whether or not drug testing is a valid expense, others are required to do it. Any companies or businesses that are covered by the DOT (or U.S. Department of Transportation) are required by law to drug test their employees. According to the Drug-Free Workplace Act, a business must drug test its employees if it has any hopes of contracting with the government. The issuing of federal government grants to a business also requires drug testing of its employees.
Testing for drug use ensures fairness. Three years ago, the Florida governor deemed it a requirement that state employees submit to drug tests. Government employees are compensated entirely with tax dollars, and the governor only felt drug testing the individuals was fair in order to assure the public that they weren't financially supporting drug use. It is now also required by law to submit to drug testing if you wish to apply for help from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families in Florida.
