Tiger Woods; everyone has heard that name, everyone has seen him on TV commercials, endorsing things from his new Wii game to his own formulated sports drink. Everyone watched as he entered the PGA tour as a young, transcendent, if not unbridled talent who took the game of Golf into new heights.

Everyone also watched as he limped across the finish line at Torrey Pines on a knee that needed reconstructive surgery and months of rehabilitation and rest. It seems the world has watched him grow up, and is exposed to him so much that most people might think they know him. At least they think they do.
His Play is What Attracts Us
In reality, the world only watches Tiger from a far, without really getting to know the soon to be Billionaire sports star. People have become followers of Tiger because of his golf game and not because friendliness or warmth, that’s for sure. It is because of his awe-inspiring performances that people are so hooked on him.
Along with tour players giving out signatures, high fives, smiles and the occasional joke, Tiger stands an arms length away, forever focused on the next shot, the next hole, the next silverware. People follow Tiger for one reason; he is an incredible talent, with the determination and will to match. His intensity captures us; his fist-pumps and roars excites us but most of all, his play leaves us all in awe.
His play is the magnet that attracts us and his play is also the main reason why most people forget (and forgive) the fact that people know absolutely nothing about this fiery red blur sweeping them off their feet. And that is exactly how Tiger wants it; it is by design.
How He Became this Way
It's not hard to see why Tiger is like this. At the young age of 16, this future star got his first death threat, and if Tiger was not detached or as detached as before, this pushed him over the edge. Couple that with the criticisms he got on an interview with GQ Magazine, where he offered up sexual and racial jokes; as well as the ones he got on Oprah where he admitted to being bothered when called or referred to as an African-American (he was a mix of various ethnicities), one cannot fault Tiger for being the way he is.
The public, with their scandal-obsessed appetites, wish for controversy and gobble up every single morsel of it when they do get a taste. It is them that caused Tiger to retreat. He changed the way he interacted with the outside world to keep his family safe and his image intact.
We Might Never Really Know Him
People may not ever know the real Tiger Woods; he may never let his guard down again. We will probably never see him smile and acknowledge the crowd as much as Phil Mickelson does. And we will probably never know what is going on his head or what he really thinks of his fame, his money, his everything. The Public eye will probably never know who he really is, and maybe that’s not so bad. He already gives people a the possibility of having a glimpse at perfection every time he steps on the course, and maybe asking him to hold their hands and share a beer while he does so is asking too much.
