As millions of people already know, Twitter is a fantastic tool that can be used for countless purposes. But bloggers in particular can get a lot out of it. This article lists some of the main benefits.

There is a great deal of excitement about Twitter. It's one of the biggest social, most active social networking sites there are. It's great for anyone who wants to connect with like minded people. But it's particularly good for bloggers. There are numerous reasons for this, but I'll just list a few main ones.
Firstly, because Twitter is updated so often, the search engines love it. They come back frequently to see what's new. So if you tweet a blog post, chances are that Google will learn about it a bit quicker than if you hadn't. In fact, it's a little like "pinging" your post.
Of course all bloggers want to have their posts indexed by Google as quickly as possible. But for those who blog about topical issues this is even more important. If you're in that blog niche then being on Twitter isn't just advisable, it's crucial!
Then there is the fact that Twitter already has countless bloggers using it. And bloggers can learn a lot from their peers. They can also help each other SEO and traffic-wise by linking to posts. If you use Twitter like a search engine you can find many new bloggers in your niche. Perusing various Twitter lists is another effective method of achieving this.
Speaking of SEO: Google definitely does take the Twitter "signal" into account when ranking blogs. If you are very active on the social networking site, with your blog URL listed there, then you'll start to see a small lift in traffic from search engines. (I have experienced this effect personally.)
Then there's the simple click through effect. Because Twitter is so active and with such a huge membership base, you'll be getting extra clicks to the blog posts you tweet. If you choose your keywords well and lots of tweeps read your tweet, then you can easily gain an extra five or ten clicks to that post -- and that's even if you don't have a big following.
You'll also get some clicks coming in off your main Twitter page from those who have found it by searching within that site. That's why your should think carefully about how best to describe yourself in your main profile.
Of course you should say that you have a blog and list the URL. You should also say exactly what kind of blogger you are and what subjects you focus on. That will help to attract other bloggers in your niche with whom you can network.
If you keep tweeting your blog posts regularly, retweeting others occasionally, and always saying thanks for the retweets and mentions you do get, your Twitter reputation will grow quite quickly. More and more fellow bloggers will follow you and you'll also end up on more lists, further increasing your exposure.
