Despite the persistent stigma that they’re “corrupting the young” and are pointless wastes of time, video games have become one of the most popular ways for people to pass the time. There are countless parents out there blaming video games for everything from poor grades to violent and rebellious behavior – all while conveniently neglecting to realize what part everything else might play. The Internet has taken a hit too, particularly since it lets people download games, which gives players even less control over what games their children might be playing.
Through the years, the role of gaming has evolved. With the introduction of Wii Fit, the elderly are kept entertained while being aided with mobility.
When played in moderation, gaming has also been noted to aid children with ADHD to focus their immense energy level into a direct single focus. In addition, it brings the children into a peaceful and tranquil state, as brainwave frequencies are visibly transitioned into a beta, or meditative state while focusing on achievements or other parts of the game.
The studies also noted that the use of video games is equally good (if not better) as the use of medication; the latter can sometime cause adverse effects to the body. Attention span, IQ levels and neurological feedback may also be increased.
Another obvious benefit of video games is that they can help a person of any age enhance their vision. People used to believe that staring at a TV or computer screen for a long period of time would worsen one’s eyesight. However, it was confirmed that video games can effectively improve contrast sensitivity by assisting the eye make out the smallest shifts in shades and colors. In addition, doctors and scientists firmly believe that gaming can also decrease the effects of age-related macular degeneration, although no study has been conducted to support this yet.
Completing such games successfully would also logically give the players some sense of achievement as they move on to the next level. Because of this, players are motivated work harder and to become result-driven and goal-oriented. Hopefully, this kind of mentality will be eventually applied into everyday life, so that these individuals can put the same amount of concentration, hard work and determination that they do for the video game, towards real-life ambitions and desires.
Completing some games can be very challenging by their very nature, which can give players a sense of achievement in making progress. The industry is laden with examples of games that have become hits simply because they managed to motivate people to play for longer hours to achieve some in-game goal. In theory, this sort of mentality can be applied to real life, provided those people can be convinced to put that much effort, creativity, skill, and thought into real-life goals and objectives.
