The city is an abode of more than 300 high schools, a few old Christian Missionary schools. The Doon School, St. Joseph's Academy, Welham Girls School, Welham Boys School, St. Thomas' College come under the catalogue of elite institutes in Dehradun. The Rashtriya Indian Military College is a public Boys school housed in the city.
There are a good number of schools in the city having affiliations either from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) or Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) or National Open Schools. The city also offers special schools for girls and boys as well as co-educational schools. Both boarding (hostel) and day schools are placed in Dehradun making it a hub of reputed schools.

One of the prominent public schools for boys situated in the beautiful Doon Valley is The Rashtriya Indian Military College or the RIMC. It is traditionally known as feeder association for the National Defence Academy.
