Protein in urine is clinically named as proteinuria. It is a common clinical symptom in Kidney Disease. However, besides Kidney Disease, in some other cases, there is also protein in urine.
In normal cases, our urine only has a very small amount of protein in urine and only 20~80 mg of protein is excreted into urine per day. When the excretion of protein in urine exceeds 150 mg in 24 hours, it is called proteinuria. In terms of the causes of proteinuria, it can be divided into physiological proteinuria, orthostatic proteinuria and pathological proteinuria.
Physiological proteinuria is not caused by Kidney Disease. For the healthy people, in some stress states, like high temperature, intense exercise, colds, and so on, they will have mild, transient protein in urine. After the inducements are removed, the protein in urine will disappear very soon.
Orthostatic proteinuria often occurs after someone walks for a long time. But when the person lies down, the protein in urine will disappear. The amount of protein in urine is less than 1 gram per day and this phenomenon is commonly seen among young people.
Pathological proteinuria is caused by primary Glomerular Disease like Acute and Chronic Glomerular Nephritis, Nephrotic Syndrome and so on and secondary Glomerular Disease such as kidney injury caused by connective tissue disease and other metabolic diseases like Diabetic Nephropathy and so on.
In this case, the glomeruli are damaged so they lose the mechanical and electrostatic barrier. As a result, the protein that needs by body will leak into urine. This kind of proteinuria often last for a long time. Moreover, the persons may also be complicated with some other symptoms like hypertension, back pain and so on.
Therefore, when you are diagnosed with proteinuria, you should not worry too much. You should primarily find the specific causes of proteinuria and adopt the relative measures. In the first two cases, you do not need treatments and the proteinuria usually disappears for a short time. However, if you are diagnosed with pathological proteinuria, you should receive treatment as early as possible to prevent further damage to your kidneys.
