Spanish island begins slow recovery from recent forest fire which saw hundreds of tourists evacuated
Ibiza, one of the most notorious and popular Spanish tourist destinations for UK holidaymakers, was in the news lately. And this time it wasn’t for the opening of a new super club, or a further development in the island’s efforts to protect and preserve its natural resources.
No; on May 27th, an unexpected forest fire broke out, burning nearly 5,000 acres of forest in the north of the island and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of local residents, farmers and their animals, as well as holidaymakers in the region.
140 residents of the Sant Eulalia and Sant Joan regions had properties directly affected; and the majority of these properties are homes and residences, rather than commercial ventures, hotels or hostels. Many of these residents are fearful of further damage which could be caused by unfelled or uncleared dead trees around their properties – the removal of which will depend on the Spanish Environment Ministry.
The tourism industry will put on a brave face – and the bustling ports of San Antoni and Eivissa will barely miss a beat, as thousands of Euros from new cruise liners and luxury yachts pass into the harbours – and sun-seekers from across the continent will be largely unaffected by the damage. Yet they can still do their part of support the island, even as it provides them with rest and relaxation.
As its UNESCO World Heritage sites and protected nature reserves remind us, this is an island of great community and preservation. So for those of us thinking about taking a trip to the island, and perhaps benefiting from the cheap car hire Ibiza has to offer, with companies such as Ritmo Cars, here are a few tips and reminders for minimising your affect on the island’s eco-structure:
Drive slow
Roads in Ibiza are not exactly autobahns anyway, but especially in the northern part of the island, where horses and other wildlife are common road-sharers, driving at a slow and respectful pace will reduce your costs and your emissions.
Carbon offset
Plenty of specialised companies – and even regular UK insurers – now offer the chance to carbon offset the cost of your car hire holiday. Do it before you go and you can drive Ibiza with added consideration.
Litter awareness
Having a sneaky barbecue on the beach? Make sure you tidy up everything before you leave – especially burning coals. The Balaeric islands do have arid areas which can catch fire again due to carelessness.
