Why Heat Is Bad for Your Stogies

Humidors are a must--and they must be taken care of properly. If you misuse them, your cigars will be ruined! What can happen if you disregard temperature and humidity? Well, look out below!
We all know that storing your stogies properly is the most important thing for a cigar lover. As the weather changes, we often forget that those changes affect our cigars (even when they’re stored in a humidor). Heat is your enemy, and if you think this only applies during the summer, you’re wrong. What do most people do in the winter? They turn up the heat. So be careful about putting your cigars in too hot of an environment—and here are some reasons why!

Mold:

Failure to consistently check your humidor for proper temperature and humidity readings may lead to mold-growth on your cigars. Remember that your humidor helps increase the humidity inside during the colder, drier months but also should keep the proper conditions when the humidity is actually higher on the outside.

To remove humidity from the air inside your humidor, use 100% Silica Gel beads—and believe it or not, a lot of smokers use 100% silica gel kitty litter! This keeps your cigars safe and your humidor functioning the way it should.

Beetles:

Humidors kept at excess of 77 degrees are like a ticking time bomb! Nearly all cigars contain microscopic tobacco beetle eggs. To stay safe—and never see these guys pop up!—keep your humidor at 70 degrees and 65%-70% humidity. Anything above 70 creates ideal conditions for the eggs to hatch and begin destroying your cigars. These beetles will destroy your entire cigar stash if you don’t combat them!

Keep your humidor in a cool place away from direct sunlight; this is the best environment for your stogies. Most houses get into the high 70’s with the AC low. Solution: keep your humidors in the basement where it stays nice and cool all day.

No basement? Hide your humidors in the back of a closet, insulated by blankets. This will keep the temperature from varying too much.

One of the best times to enjoy a cigar is on a warm summer night. Don’t ruin this amazing opportunity by being too lax with maintaining the best conditions in your humidor! Whatever you do, just keep them out of the temperature danger zone!
