In 1996, a young man named Tiger Woods broke onto the professional golf scene. He had a reputation of being young and talented, but no one expected him to skyrocket that high and that fast. Over the years he has gained millions and millions of fans for his remarkable talent and impressive character, both as a golfer and as a person. There’s little doubt, if not none at all, that Woods will go down in history as the greatest golfer to ever play the game when he retires. Until then, we should all feel lucky that we are able to witness the unfolding career of someone like Woods. Further, it’s about time we check out the top three reasons to love about the Tiger.
Tiger Woods always delivers big
As competitive beings, we all often fantasize about delivering big on the biggest stages. Whether on the soccer field, the basketball court, the swimming pool or in the boardroom, all of us have imagined making that crucial step en route to a grand victory. This is exactly the reason why Tiger Woods is Tiger Woods. The most admirable thing he does is he always steps up and wins when it matters most. Tiger has proven time and time again that when it is crunch time and he is trailing behind, you know he is going to do something big and end up winning again. Likewise, no one catches up on him when he is leading the pack. In other words, Tiger Woods does not have the word “choke” in his vocabulary.
No one can match Tiger’s mental toughness
In a sport lacking in physical demands, golf makes up for it by being very mentally demanding, as players need to think and strategize constantly in order to win. Before hitting the ball there are several factors to consider such as wind direction, wind speed, club to be used, distance preferred, etc. In this principle, no one is better than Tiger Woods. In 2003, Woods was so sick during the fourth round of an invitational tour that he threw up numerous times. Yet, he still managed to win the tournament by a rather large margin. He did it again during the 2008 US Open where he could have withdrawn due to knee and leg pains, but he decided to continue playing. He eventually overcame these setbacks and grimaced his way to another Major victory.
Tiger Woods is simple and very likeable
In an era when superstar athletes are given millions of dollars in salaries and endorsement deals, we often see them living in posh houses, driving luxury sports cars, and wearing too much jewelry. Which is why it is refreshing to see someone who doesn’t flaunt his wealth. It is in fact ironic because Tiger Woods has always been the highest paid professional athlete in the world for a long time now, but you would have never guessed it because he simply doesn’t exhibit his wealth. Indeed everyone must have heard stories about his 155-foot yacht and multi-million dollar homes, but they did not hear about these coming from him. For someone who will be worth more than $1 billion by 2011, we should all adore and respect this level of humility. GP
