While doctors are professionals like a real estate consultant or an artist, they have a aura of their own. Though it is not entirely true for dentists or even a psychiatrist, yet it is more applicable to the breed that makes a difference between life and death. Topping this list are surgeons, cardiologists, pulmonary specialists, and even cosmetic surgeons for some. While the career opportunity was open to almost all of us, we ignore it only to spend our adult lives paying homage to these men. Most people are not sure if there is something that we do to encourage it, but many doctors seem to be taking this homage too seriously. There is a supercilious attitude, a smug grin, and often a very patronizing tone they tend to adopt when they speak to laymen.
As the Internet age has brought information to our doorsteps, we can search information about an impending operation or suspect side effects of a drug easily. While the online information we go through don't make us a doctor, we may question based on these findings that why the attending physician cannot take out some time to answer our queries. In fact, instead of appreciating the effort that we are making, most seem to mind this research tremendously. They possibly see it as cutting into their precious billable time, not realizing that they are causing the patient needless anxiety. Even it was just a matter of explaining, I would pass this point up. Problem is medicine is not an exact science and doctors are not Gods; at least not all of them out there holding a medical degree. So a human being, doctor or not, is perfectly capable of making a mistake and should not find be always perfect to resolve a patient's doubts.
Let me move on to some others which seem to think they are doing a favor by attending to us. These are usually the scarce variety which is thriving on the principles of a monopoly. It could be the "best" heart surgeon in the city or the only doctor in a village. They understand the value that they bring to the table and do not hesitate in leveraging it. Problem is that they are in the business of helping people, and this attitude is sickening, to say the least.
I admit that doctors are also humans, subject to the same frailties, mood swings, and desire for prosperity. Nobody takes an issue with that. What I am against is compromising on one's profession. As a doctor, you are responsible for the emotional and physical health of your patient. An anxious, unhappy, or slighted patient is in no way better than a physically injured one. This is why good bedside manners are not just desirable but a necessary part of one's service. Doctors that are brusque or rude are not real doctors, they are just businessmen taking advantage of people's need and cheating them in the name of quality healthcare. With more and more people taking up medicine as a career, let's hope that this professional also becomes commercialized to a limit where quality drives the popular mindset.
