There have been additional studies that have shown that there are various benefits of employee referral programs which includes increasing the quality of hires, morale and a company’s bottom line. Not fully utilizing referrals means that you may miss out on the opportunity to hire a significant number of top-quality candidates.

Employees have been referring friends and acquaintances for hiring even when no structured recruitment process existed, let alone an employee referral program. The reality is that every individual wants to work with people they respect and like, which is why they end up referring friends, acquaintances or past colleagues for job openings within the same organization. Even in organizations with no formal referral program, it is not that employees do not refer. Employees still refer, sometimes to help out a friend in need of a job or simply because they happen to know someone who fits the job description.

In today’s business world, when most organizations have formal employee referral program, the reasons for employee participation are as varied as the people participating in the referral program. Each employee set has some unique characteristics which in turn act as motivators for them to participate in an employee referral program.

Rewards are touted as the main reason why employees participate in a referral program but this does not have universal application. Rewards do help to motivate employees who are otherwise reluctant to make the effort but not all employees are motivated by the lure of cash rewards. Recognition is a far more powerful tool in motivating employees to participate in the referral program as all employee love to be appreciated in front of peers and co workers. Rewards and recognition combined together act as great motivators to keep employees participating again and again in the referral program.

The best referrals come from top performers in the organizations and their reasons for participating in the referral program are generally more to do with getting to work with like- minded colleagues who will help them work better and faster.

There are employees whose social and professional connections can make up an entire directory whereas there are others whose social circle is restricted to a handful of chosen ones. Employees with a wide circle are generally motivated to participate primarily because they receive a lot of solicitations from people for referrals and also because this helps them widen their circle and exert greater influence within their circle.
