When a man reaches 50 years, it’s critical for him to go in for a yearly PSA test. The prostate-specific antigen test is of course a valuable tool in checking the PSA level in the blood. It is carried out by taking blood from the arm with a fine needle and sent to a lab for examination. In 1994, the FDA endorsed the PSA test as a means to help catch prostate cancer. Standard testing has turned out to be valuable, as deaths brought on by this cancer in the past 20 years have been decreased to almost one third since the PSA test was initiated.
While observing normal levels of PSA is typical, an elevated PSA may mean the presence of prostate cancer or other forms of serious conditions. There are of course reasons why you mustn't get overwhelmed with your PSA score. To start with, it can cause concern when you are informed that a typical PSA level is 4 and below but still are not cleared of prostate growth. There are indeed people who are identified with prostate cancer whose PSA score stays constant (this of course shows that the disease is not advancing). You may ask why take the test, when either way this won't affirm anything and you will still be asked to take possible further tests. The reality is that there are numerous reasons that influence PSA levels to elevate and not simply due to prostate cancer.
Here are few activities that can lead to high PSA score:
- Active exercises like brisk walking and cycling right before 1 or 2 days of your test
- Sexual activity before 1/2 days may lightly increase your score
- Of course aged men generally have an elevated level of PSA
- Also there are indeed medications that can play a role in elevating the level
- People with BPH also contain higher levels
Having said all this, the PSA test is of high importance when there's a consistent increase in the level over a time period of 6 months to a year and more. Its best to get it examined once in every 6 months instead of every month/week. Although, the PSA score may not be a precise indicator to know if you are affected by prostate cancer but it is right now the best way to find out.
