The article provides a brief description of typical eye problems. They're indications that you should get an eye test. Only after having a thorough scan will it be determined if you require prescription lenses.
There are many signs which could indicate that you need prescription lenses. Here are some common sight problems encountered by people.

Myopia

Sometimes labeled short-sightedness, it describes when objects that are near you are clear but those that are far are blurry. This can make it not easy to see road signs and dangers from a distance. If you're sitting down at the back of a large conference room and you can't browse the white board then consider getting an eye test. Sometimes individuals are not aware their eyesight isn't clear.

Hyperopia

Also called 'long-sightedness', that's where objects which are distant look clear but those that are near aren't. Other indicators are difficulty focusing and headaches. The mild cases do not require prescription lenses.

Astigmatism

This isn't a disease but a sign that you've got a different shaped cornea. Most people have slight astigmatism. Unless this gives you consistent headaches, you won't need corrective glasses.

Presbyopia

The eye muscles can find it difficult to clearly focus on objects as you age. If you find yourself holding an item out (like a magazine) just so you can zoom in on the words then you ought to get a scan. You need to strongly consider this when you reach your forties. These may be remedied by glasses or contact lenses.

Other conditions to look out for

Dry eyes

If you feel like there's something in your eyes, or its watery, itchy or burning it could imply that it's dry. Do not scratch your eyes. Try blinking more, drinking lots of water and looking away from the computer monitor every 45 minutes.

Spots

They are common as you get older. If you see a rapid and immediate change, then go and see your optometrist.

Pterygium

That's where there's a raised tissue spot around the white area of your eyes. It is going to often appear on both eyes. While it's not dangerous you must get sunglasses and lenses with UV protection. Don't get cheap ones because the lenses might not have UV protection and may cause headaches due to the poor lens quality.

Cataract

This is a natural result of ageing for many. It affects your vision by clouding the lens area. It worsens over time and alters vision. Colours might appear yellowish and shadows may appear as your eye moves. Go to the doctor to make sure.

Glaucoma

It's an eye disease that may lead to blindness. Fibres in the back of the eye gradually die because of pressure build-up. Symptoms may not be obvious until quite advanced.

Age-related mascular degeneration

This is actually the main cause of blindness because of ageing. Waste amasses behind the eye affecting vision. Another kind triggers new blood vessels to grow at the back of the eye. As you become older you must think about getting your eyes scanned.

Get an eye test if you encounter any one of these symptoms. If you get headaches it could sometimes be associated with the eyes. It's also wise to be proactive and have your eyesight checked every six months for safety measure.
