GPS navigation is here to stay- and one of the ways it is improving and growing is within the Smart Phone technology. Millions will be taking advantage of GPS navigation right on their cell phones, making GPS apps more popular than ever in the coming year.
GPS navigation systems are evolving so fast it can seem difficult to keep up with the changes. Before you purchase your next GPS navigation system, here's a rundown on the latest changes.

Save on a ticket- some of the newest GPS navigation systems include a speed trap warning. While nothing is fool proof- and we don't advocate driving above the posted speed limit- there are systems, including the newest called the GPS Angel, which can let you know of upcoming red light cameras and speed cameras. The GPS Angel is not a radar detector. It uses the technology of a SiRF Star III GPS chip to let you know when you have entered an area with red light cameras and speed cameras- and it is completely legal.

Save on car rentals- Another new idea utilizing GPS technology is a carpooling assistant. You can combine the technology of GPS navigation and Smart Phone technology to hitch a ride. The person seeking a ride plugs in their location and the GPS will find the vehicle closest to you with a GPS device. The Smart Phone application allows the rider to electronically pay the driver for the carpooling opportunity. There are filters available that help you narrow down your choice by gender, smoking options, price and other factors. The service, called flinc, will be introduced in spring 2010.

Smart phones GPS navigation is improving. The Apple iPhone 4.0 debuts with a new multitasking feature that allows users to keep the GPS navigation apps open while they use their phone, respond to email and other multitasking functions. While some Smart phones, notably Droid, have had this feature for a while now, with Apple joining the game, this will now become a given in Smart Phone technology- which of course opens the door to the next level of innovation for using GPS navigation technology and Smart Phones.

BlackBerry and Google are also upgrading their GPS navigation with improvements to the Google Maps apps for certain BlackBerry phones. You can now use a voice search feature to find specific addresses, categories of places, such as restaurants and save your searches for later. The voice feature of Google Maps takes your GPS navigation systems to the next level of convenience and driver safety.

GPS mobile phone technology is certainly expanding. The number of phones with GPS navigation imported from China is expected to increase from 7.30 million in 2009 to 21.2 million in 2010- an increase of about 300 %. Those numbers are expected to continue to rise in the future.
