What's Needed To Become A Woodworker

A summary of basic woodworking tools that are a necessity for the job. If you become a proficient woodworker - there is money to be made for yourself or any needy charitable organization.
Like any other hobby, there is an investment to be made if one wishes to become a woodworker. Creating things out of wood is one of the oldest and most rewarding ways to spend your time. People have been making things out of wood for centuries, but until recently people have not had access to powerful tools that make your finished projects look professional.

If you’re new to woodworking and are looking to build your shop, here are some of the basic power tools you will need. Of course you will need hammers, nails, cordless drills, and the like, but these are the biggies.

A Table Saw is a Necessity

The table saw is a staple of the woodworker’s shop. If you’ve never used one, then you don’t know the kind of stability and accuracy the table saw provides. I remember trying to make a birdhouse when I was a boy scout. All I had was a hand saw that I called a “cartoon saw.” It took me months to build a birdhouse and it was crappy. My cuts were off, my edges weren’t straight. A Table saw helps you make the right cuts. A table saw is a saw on a flat surface A good table saw runs from around $250-$900.

A Belt Sander is Going to Save You a Lot of Tedious, Hard Work

When I was making my birdhouse, my dad showed me his package of loose sand paper in the garage and I got to work. Many hours and gallons of elbow grease later I had sanded the edges off my birdhouse, but it still looked pretty bad. A belt sander provides a lot of that elbow grease for you and cuts down on time considerably. It won’t do the fine sanding required in some complicated projects, but it can give the entire piece the quick once-over that it needs before you apply the finish. Belt sanders are around $100-200.

Circular Saws – Hand Held for Accuracy

The table saw is not always the best saw to use. There are several ways to skin a cat, and several ways to cut wood. Circular saws are hand held, so it takes more practice to become proficient than with table saws. Let’s face it, not every cut can be made on top of the table. With practice, the circular saw can be used to cut straight lines. There are many different sizes and colors of circular saws on the market, but you can get one you don’t have to be ashamed of for around $200.

A Vacuum Cleaner in a Woodworkers Shop?

Now wait a minute, I want to be a woodworker not a butler! Not so fast. A day, or even a few hours, in your shop will make quite a mess. You think you can just use your spouse’s vacuum? You’re probably going to need your own vacuum for the shop. Wood dust buildup is inevitable and dangerous. The shop needs to be cleaned after every use.

Now that you know what tools you need, you can get well on your way to making that casket for Fluffy.
