What is an HVAC Technician?
An HVAC technician is a professional who specializes in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning service and support. HVAC technicians typically focus on the installation of new systems or older systems already in place. HVAC technicians generally get their start in the business by completing HVAC courses. What does a HVAC technician do on the job? Keep reading to find out.
Just a Phone Call Away
A typical day for HVAC technicians consists of several phone calls from customers made either the night before or in the morning. Technicians will set up appointments based on these calls. The average technician will do two to four calls a day depending on the difficulty of the job, and the skill of the HVAC technician. Technicians will usually arrive at the customer's location with a truck that is carrying the necessary equipment for the job.
At the Customers Location
When arriving at the customers location, technicians typically speak with the customer to gather more information about the problem, finding out the exact symptoms the customer had noticed. Technicians will also ask questions about the history of the products, like when it was last serviced, or if it had previous problems. The information provided by the customer can help the technician reveal the problem.
While Busy at Work
HVAC technicians will run diagnostics of the equipment to see just what the problem is. Technicians will take several different readings utilizing the tools they have to ensure the right diagnosis of the problem. They will also try to figure out and pinpoint what went wrong, and come up with the right solution to fix the problem.
The repair of the equipment can vary for customers. Sometimes technicians will have what they need to fix a customer's problem in their truck. But other times, technicians may need to special order certain parts, and set up a different date to install it.
Finishing the Work Day
Once everything is repaired and the customer is completely satisfied, the technician will give the customer the bill. Technicians call this a service ticket. The technician will fill out the ticket with the amount of hours they worked and the parts they used for the job. The customer will then have the option to pay the bill on the spot, or sign the slip, which allows customers to be billed by the company at a later date. Once technicians are finished with all the jobs booked for the day, they will return to the shop, drop off paperwork, restock their trucks, and get ready for the next day of work.
