What you need to Become a Home Canner with your All American Pressure Canner

So you've decided to become a home canner? You've chosen an All American Canner in the size that suits your familys needs, and now we take you through the list of other things you need to make your home canning experience a great success.
So you've decided to become a home canner? You've chosen an All American Canner in the size that suits your family’s needs, and now you have to consider the other things that you are going to need.

Let's go through them now;

• Canning jars. You will need special canning jars with two-piece lids. The most popular sizes are pint and quart, which are useful for fruit and vegetables, but smaller sizes are more appropriate for jams, relishes and jellies. Mason jars are the most popular choice as they are an age old brand with a great reputation. But tempered glass ensures maximum protection against cracking under high heat and pressure.

• Two-piece lids. As mentioned above your jars need to be sealed using a two-piece lid. The flat disc like section of the lid will fit snugly over the top of the jar, whilst the second element, the screw on portion fits over the top of the flat lid giving you a perfect seal. You can buy either component in boxes of 12 or more and this makes it easy for replacing faulty lids. Once the seal has been damaged it should be thrown out and never used again.

• Non-metallic spatulas. It is important to use a non-metallic spatula to avoid contamination. You will use this bachelor to fold through your mixture to release air bubbles which will ensure bacteria free canning.

• Jar lifters. These are tongs with a wide opening that fit over the jars for easy removal from boiling water.

• Funnels. You'll need a wide mouth funnel so you can fill the jars easily with your chosen fruits or vegetables.

• Absorbent mats. This will keep your bench space clean so you can minimise any mess and protect your bench top from excessive heat.

• Cloths for cleaning the rims of the jars and for wiping up excess food.

• Specialty add-ons. You should purchase the appropriate add-ins for each type of food that you are planning to preserve. For instance you will need pectin for your jams, cherry pitters and perhaps a strawberry huller. You can even buy specialty bubble removers if you don't want to use your spatula.

• Canning jar racks. These racks allow you to store your jars easily, taking a possible space as possible.

• A jar wrench. These are handy for those occasions when lids are difficult to remove. They provide you with a safe mechanism for removing the most stubborn of lids.
