People often times do not understand the difference between staying in Cancun, Mexico and staying, as the locals call in “down in the Riviera Maya”.
The Riviera Maya is a stretch of highway which runs from the Cancun Airport to Tulum a distance of about 100 miles. The highway parallels the coast and has about 30,000 hotel rooms in addition to some 28,000 hotel rooms in Cancun, Mexico.
Basically this is the situation. When you are in Cancun you will have the benefit of being able to go to the Cancun Party Zone and the Cancun shopping centers, and even Cancun’s town center.
When you are staying in the Riviera Maya, with the exception of Playa del Carmen, you are at the particular hotel you choose. To leave the hotel will cost you an expensive taxi ride as there is nothing normally close to your hotel.
Now that is not to say that you should not stay in the Riviera Maya, it is just a fact. So, if you do stay in the Riviera Maya there are still plenty of things to do in the Riviera Maya. Most of the tours in the Riviera Maya are the same tours that are offered in Cancun. As most tours in Cancun tours and the Riviera Maya tours have hotel pickup being in the Riviera Maya is not a drawback.
Riviera Maya archeological tours include such greats as Chichen Itza, the most visited of all the Mayan ruins - Chichen Itza from the Riviera Maya does include hotel pickup and return. Chichen Itza is dedicated as one of the 7 wonders of the world. Chichen Itza is a Riviera Maya trip that must not be missed. It is one of the true great tours in Riviera Maya.
Also in the Riviera Maya archeological tour category you have such other great tours as the Coba-Maya Village where you visit the Coba Mayan ruins - with the tallest pyramid on the Yucatan Peninsula and then on to a Mayan Village to see how the present day Mayans live.
Tulum is the second most visited tour on the Yucatan peninsula and sits majestically on the only bluff on the entire Yucatan peninsula. Incredible views are had from the Tulum ruins. Tulum is one of the great Riviera Maya things to do as it does not take an entire day as does the Chichen Itza tours from Riviera Maya. So if you just have a passing interest in the Mayan ruins and don’t want to spend the entire day - go to Tulum.
One good thing about staying in the Riviera Maya all the ruin tours, with the exception of Chichen Itza are closer to your hotel than if you were staying in Cancun.
