There is maybe one thing more than others that can put a drag on traveling for vacation or business travel, and that is losing your bags. Arriving at a destination without a change of clothes, needed paperwork, or medicines can be frustrating and alarming. Not only are there some steps you can take to remove the possibility of losing your luggage, but there are some actions you can take to recover lost bags as well.
Luggage should be in great condition with no loose pieces. Handles should be strong enough for a luggage handler to grab without breaking. The baggage must have identification on the outside, and other ID inside for the case where the outside ID tag breaks or falls off. Be sure to include your name and a phone number. It is also good to include the state in which you reside full time. It is also wise to put some type of identifier that is specific to you: colorful strap, ribbon, sticker, etc. This will stand out to others with similar baggage, and they will not accidently take your bag.
When traveling by air, watch the attendant put the tag on your luggage. The destination city and your name should be on the tag. If you are traveling to more than one destination on a connecting flight, the tag should include the final destination. These luggage tags can also be used to identify your luggage if your ID tag is separated from your bag. Stay and watch your bags loaded onto the conveyor belts. Do not leave if the luggage is left sitting on the floor. This means you will have to allow yourself some wiggle room with time prior to your flight.
When traveling by bus, your luggage usually does not travel separately from you and the bus. You have more of an opportunity to watch the luggage as it’s placed on the bus, and taken off the bus. You should watch to make sure your bags are actually placed in the cargo hold prior to boarding the bus.
If your bags are lost and you find yourself attempting to recover your lost bag, there are tips and procedures that can help you recover them quicker. The first thing to do is notify the carrier that your bags are lost. They may have you fill out paperwork, which is vital to being reunited with your luggage. They will want to know where you will be staying, a number you can be reached at, the color and size of the bags, your travel itinerary, and the contents of the bag. They will also ask for unique identifiers on the outside of the bag- this is where your personal ID tags and stickers come in handy!
To avoid being left without your medication, you should carry that with you, or keep at least three days’ worth of pills with you. This will get you through a weekend, until you can contact a doctor to call in a prescription for you. Some airlines and buses offer you a dollar amount to replace clothing and other personal items that were lost; however, be sure to see it in writing before you assume they will cover anything you purchase.
Following these steps will not insure your luggage will not be lost; however, they can aid in eliminating the chance it may be lost, and aid in recovering lost luggage.
