“Deck the halls with boughs of holly…Tis the season to be jolly,” goes a popular Christmas carol. Christmas as we all know is the season of fun and happiness. There’s a mad frenzy to buy gifts for loved ones. But what happens when the festivities are over and you are left with a pile of half opened unwanted Christmas gifts that lie on your closet. It is said that despite the financial crunch, millions of dollars are wasted every year on unwanted Christmas gifts. Here’s what you can do about gifts that were nowhere on your Christmas list:

Look for Refunds: Shops aren’t obliged to offer refunds for gifts that are returned; unless they are found to be faulty or damaged. But given the economic situation, retailers have now started to offer refunds on returned goods. While some stores do so to attract customers, there are others who do so out of goodwill. But if you are looking for a refund, make sure to do so within the stipulated period, and don’t forget to carry the receipt along with you. Without a receipt some shops usually do not allow a refund, but some may offer to exchange. Needless to say, the gift should be in the same condition as that when it was purchased.

Resell: It is said that unwanted gifts worth millions of dollars are sold on eBay. Things that you consider trash may be someone’s treasure! There are people who have made hundreds of dollars by selling unwanted gifts. It is sites like these where you can dump your unwanted vibrating slippers, Simpson boxer shorts, and Christmas themed socks.

Give it away for Charity: There are millions of people out there who rough it up during the cold winter months, even as you rue about the Christmassy jumpers. You can always arrange for these unwanted gifts to be given away for charity. The clothes and other stuff are given away to clothe and feed the poor.

Swap them: There are several websites that allow you to swap unwanted gifts with those who might need them. All that you have got to do, is to register on one of these sites, post images of your gift, and mention about goods that you would like in return.

As for me, I’m not really bothered about unwanted gifts, because I’ve been smart this year and have prepared my very own Christmas wish list! There are several sites that help you decide the kind of kinds that you would like. You can send this list to your near and dear ones, who can choose to buy a gift that’s right for their budget.
