Deciding where to maintain an online presence for your business isn't always easy. These days, there are many choices in social media, and you might not know which to choose. Although you might be tempted to create an account for every social network there is, you'll end up wasting precious time – and you'll certainly be overwhelmed trying to give your all on each network. You don't have to create an account on every social network to market successfully; you just need to do a little research.
First, you should give serious thought about your business and your goals. What do you want to accomplish through an online presence with social media? Think about what sorts of updates you want to make and who you want to connect with and why. You should also do some research to see what social media platform your industry has the most success with. That leads us to the next point.
In addition to doing general industry research to see where people related to that field congregate, you should also take a cue from your competitors. You want to be wherever they are in order to make people aware of your presence as well. For example, if your competitors do most of their posting on Twitter, then you'll want to make an account there as well. Look at the types of things your competitors post and keep an eye on their success rates in relation to what they post. What gets the most attention? You don't want to outright copy their posts, but you can get some ideas about what captures people's attention and plan your own updates accordingly.
You should also be sure to track keywords on social media and blog sites using a tool such as Social Mention. It will make your research easier for you so you can see where people interested in your field or your type of products congregate. If that's not enough for you, you can always ask your customers directly where they tend to go through an email survey or a poll on your website.
In the end, it's up to you what social media networks you want to maintain a presence on. Just keep in mind that you will have to spend at least twenty minutes for each one engaging followers with replies and comments, reading up on updates, and posting updates.
