It is a dream come true for many people to study abroad. It’s because of the huge advantages one gets in terms of getting a job. There are many advantages of studying in top universities in the world. It’s because you get education in the most controlled environments with excellent research and tutorial facilities. Students can also get a lot of exposure while studying in such universities. They get to interact with students of other races and cultures. They also study in an environment where they are apt to learn a foreign language of strategic importance.
Take USA for example, which has Harvard the top most university in the world. But, stringent guidelines are followed while admitting students by such top universities. One of them is that the student ought to have excellent scores in the scholastic aptitude test (SAT). Apart from that, he also needs to apply to the university, which is not an easy task. The students have to send their letters of recommendation along with application fees as per the admission requirements. Even the certificates of prior schooling have to be shown to the university. In Canada students who are a part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program can easily get admissions in their universities if they are not enrolled in Canadian high schools. For gaining admission in top universities in Australia, candidates ought to have a high score in the IELTS exam. This score should be six or more than it. TOEFL scores can also be used for getting admissions but they should be equal to or more than 213/300(when the exam is computer based). For studying in UK, the students have to make application under the Tier-4 students form called the VAF (visa application form) 9. The fees for such application is 145 pounds. Studying in London can cost someone upto 7,200 Pounds as cost of residence along with tuition fees for the first year. But, the cost of living outside the London Borough is almost 5400 pounds.
In Denmark, the admission procedure requires students to have a minimum score of 6.5 in the IELTS exam. For example, this score is a norm in the Aalborg University. In UK, the admission procedure consists of selecting those students who have an IELTS score of 6 or more. Their TOEFL score can be 550 or higher than it. The same conditions apply if any student wants to get admission in any Swedish University. In Norway, Sweden and Finland, the cost of study is quite low. In Finland, the students don’t even need to pay the tuition fees. They only have to incur the student union fees, which is upto 80 Euros a year. As a student who wishes to study in Germany, getting a student visa is a must. However, citizens of countries like Canada, Australia, European Union countries, Japan, Israel, Switzerland, New Zealand and United States of America can gain admission into this country without a student visa and can apply for visa later. In Australia also, getting a student visa is a must for admission. But here, the student has to send his copy of electronic Confirmation of Enrollment (eCEO) sent to him by the Australian university of his choice to the Australian embassy or consulate while applying for the VISA. Such a document is sent to him by the university when he makes his initial payments. In this country, an initial application has to be sent to the University for gaining admission. All the full time graduation and post graduation courses in Australia require students to expend somewhere around 10,000 to 20,000 Australian dollars.
Such student file consists of degrees, certificates, diplomas and the statement of marks for 10th and 12th class exams. Such certificates have to be translated in English if it’s not so. It is important that all such documents are collected because any negligence can only cause a delayed approval of the admission application. Most of the US Universities expect students to have an overall GPA 3 score in their previous academic years.
This GPA score of three refers to the student scoring 65% in his graduation or schooling years. For postgraduate courses, the admission procedure includes review of the student file by the concerned professor of the department. The cost of study and living is also high in US universities. Apart from that, the international students have to prove to the university at the time of being admitted that they have adequate financial resources to meet all their expenses of such universities. Such financial proof is also one of the mandatory visa requirements. For such proof, students have to show the bank statements of their parents that they have sufficient funds. The tuition fees of such university can range from 1500 to 35,000 dollars per year.
The scholarships for studying abroad are available from organizations like AIFS (American institute for foreign study) minority scholarships and from the university itself. The students can get scholarships in UK as reduction in their tuition fees of the respective university. These study abroad scholarships are managed by the British Council.
In Australia, the government has announced three kinds of scholarships for its students under different categories of Australian Development Scholarships (ADS), Australian Leadership Awards Scholarships (ALA Scholarships) and Australian Leadership Awards Fellowships (ALA Fellowships).
