What is perimenopause and what should we know about it?

Menopause is a natural end to the fertility of the woman. If within 12 months the woman has a period, this means that she has not yet entered menopause and have a chance to become pregnant. Furthermore, there are natural and induced menopause. Induced menopause consists of surgical removal of the ovaries. So may result after damage to the ovaries caused by radiation or medicine.

Because of the sharp drop in hormones, induced menopause causes sudden bouts of hot flashes and other symptoms including vaginal dryness and lack of desire for sex.

Early menopause (age 40 years), whether natural or induced, increases the risk of heart disease and osteoporosis. The woman can anticipate the onset of menopause, as with approaches of this time her menstrual period is changing. The medical term which describes this period in the life of a woman is perimenopause.

Perimenopause began approximately 6 years before actual menopause. And as a result of low hormone produced by the ovaries, the monthly cycle a woman is irregular and unpredictable in terms of duration, time of appearance and manner of functioning. Hot flashes are also a sign of impending menopause. Other changes associated with menopause are sweating, mood swings, vaginal dryness, volatility in sexual desires (libido), forgetfulness, trouble sleeping and fatigue. The states that have no proven link with the menopause have frequent headaches, dizziness, palpitations and depression.

Average natural menopause occurs in women at age of 51. The phenomenon is not related to strictly defined age. Therefore it may occur earlier and later. Factors that influence the onset of perimenopause are heredity and smoking. It was found that for women who smoke, the menopause comes a few years earlier than those who have never smoked. There is no connection between the first menstruation of the woman and her age at menopause. Also, menopause starts is not influenced by weight and height of the woman or the number of children who was born or whether or not consuming contraceptives.

Traditional medicine historically has recommended hormone replacement to help women cope with the onset of perimenopause. Recent medical studies questioned the appropriateness of certain types of hormone replacement due to research associated with increased risk of developing cancer. Alternative medicine emphasizes herbs and other natural sources of hormone replacement, are now available. Most importantly, homeopathic and medical communities and encourage women to stay in tune with the needs of their bodies and to seek appropriate resources. Good nutrition, adequate rest, stress management and creativity are all necessary components for staying healthy throughout life. Woman in perimenopause should slow the pace and took time to enjoy the pleasurable activities in her life. Due to increased longevity and the current potential of the average woman to live up to the late 70's and even 80's, now 50 years old woman has much more life.
