North American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), a species in the Araliacae family, is indigenous to the eastern areas of North America, growing in Ontario, Quebec and Wisconsin. In the past two decades, Canada has grown to be the world’s largest producer of North American ginseng and about two-third of the production is from Ontario.

Scientific research has documented the active ingredients in ginseng. The therapeutic effects of the herb are attributed to a group of saponins, that are known as ginsenosides (Lui, 1980; Duke, 1989; Ma et al., 1996).
A regular dosage of North American ginseng is believed to reduce stress and fatigue, improve short-term memory, reduce blood pressure, regulate cholesterol and blood sugar level, reduce symptoms of menopause, reinforce the immune system and increase longevity (Pritts, 1995; Small, 1997).
North American ginseng is also claimed to enhance skin health. Its anti-aging effect help reduce wrinkles, fine-lines and blemishes (Hung Chun, 1997).
Many consumers on the market are confused with the differences between North American ginseng and Asian ginseng (Korean and Chinese ginseng). Although American and Asian ginseng are similar in appearance, they differ in their chemical properties. North American ginseng is known to contain more ginsenosides than Asian ginseng, (30 compared to 20 compounds identified), and is considered to be the more potent of the two.
This fact is supported by a ginseng research report titled “Decreasing, null and increasing effects of eight popular types of ginseng on acute postprandial glycemic indices in healthy humans: The role of Ginsenosides”, (page 255) showing the American ginseng contains the highest level of 4.43% of ginsenosides in comparison with other types of ginseng..
Mary Ginseng House uses only premium quality North American ginseng in the production of supplement and skin-care products.
See ginseng testing report from the University of Western Ontario and ginseng testing report from the University of Guelph in our press section.
Both reports show Mary Ginseng House ginseng containing high level of ginsenosides, from 5 % to 6.7 %.
