Many of CAD designers or CNC cutting machines users using the file type of DXF format but they don't knot what is DXF format means. We will try to discuss simply what is DXF format and its beginning history with Autodesk.
DXF is the abbreviation word for (Drawing Exchange Format), this is a Computer Assisted Design file format or a CAD format that is developed by Autodesk. The goal of Autodesk is to make an integrations and exchange of the data between the AutoCAD and the other similar drawing programs. before the appearance of the DXF format to the world at 1982 the AutoCAD was using its native Drawing format or DWG. The DXF file now are widely supported by all the CNC cutting machines like plasma cam, torchmate, powermax, plasmaspider, waterjet, hypertherm, thermal dynamics, wood engraving and many various cutting devices.
From that time all the other CAD programs have been made its specifications to exchange the data, but due to the updating of AotuCAD the upgraded versions become more complex than the old one. This complexity decrease the powerful of the DXF files to exchange the data and the AutoCAD returns to its DWG files that supports the 3D (3 Dimensional) data. The DWG file becomes more recommended and supported by many CAD programs and upgrades the specifications of the programs to supports this format even though its not the native program format.
Autodesk didn't forget the DXF and always makes updates to enable all the users of the other CAD programs to make data exchanges using both DXF or DWG formats. Autodesk offer free software called (Autodesk DWG True View) enable the user to view both formats DXF and DWG, the user can see both the 2 dimensional and the 3 dimensional views types of the designs. The data types of the DXF file format is called "tagged data" format. That means that "each data element in the file is preceded by an integer number that is called a group code. A group code's value indicates what type of data element follows.
If you are interested in DXF files format or you are a CNC cutting machine user you can find sites that offers free designs with DXF file formats like FreeDXF.com.
