This article discusses what cholesterol is, types of cholesterol and the effects caused by its high level in the body. It puts an emphasis on why it is important to lower body cholesterol.
High body Cholesterol is dangerous to the body. In fact, the leading cause of heart and blood related conditions today is cholesterol. So much debate is going on about how to lower body cholesterol and the different means to achieve this.
High body cholesterol is known as hyperlipidimia or hypercholesterolemia while low blood cholesterol is known as hypocholesterolemia.
Cholesterol is a fatty substance manufactured within our bodies. It is manufactured by the liver and intestines. It is also found in plants, marine and animal products.
Cholesterol is important to the human body. It forms the outer lining of our body cells, assists in intracellular transportation and is an important requirement by the nervous system. Cholesterol also forms the bile which helps in the digestion of fats in the body.
All fat soluble vitamins require cholesterol to be absorbed in the body. Vitamin D is synthesized from the sun by the help of body cholesterol. There are many more functions of cholesterol such as the manufacture of sex hormones in humans.
Looking at all these facts, there is no doubt that this substance is significant. However, there is the good cholesterol and the bad cholesterol. So when we talk about lowering body cholesterol, our concern is the bad cholesterol.
There are two types of body cholesterol, Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL) or the bad cholesterol and High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol.
LDL is referred to as ‘bad’ as it forms fatty layers within our blood vessels which cause constriction and thereafter blood clots and organ failure. On the other hand, HDL reduces LDL within the bloodstream as it forms bonds with it. It is then transported to the liver for storage.
So the question here is not how to get rid of cholesterol but how to lower LDL within your body. Getting rid of LDL is not that easy as it is found in most of our favorite dishes. Meals that contain eggs, meat and sausages have a lot of LDL.
It is important to understand what LDL is and its impact on your health. Getting rid of LDL involves low fat diets, exercise and medicine. Every individual is different and so many factors should be taken into concern before taking up the means to lower body cholesterol.
