There’s nothing more exciting than looking forward to that holiday you’ve planned for several months. You did your research well, got the best offer on your tickets and accommodation; prepared a list of places to see and things to do; saved enough money to spend on food, sight-seeing, souvenirs and other touristy things. Now comes the tricky part of how to carry your travel money without being afraid of losing it.

Cash:
-----

For a short travel of a couple of days or to budget destinations, this is the best way to carry your holiday money. No hassles of calculating exchange rate, transaction charges etc. Choose a good foreign exchange house that provides the best rate and convert as much as possible before you travel. If you have to buy more currency during your vacation, do so in a genuine and trusted foreign exchange house. Try to avoid buying currency at the airports, since the rates are high comparatively.

Credit Cards:
-------------

Credit cards come in handy when your holidays are longer than just a couple of days, and are probably a wise option to use when you go on a shopping spree during your vacation. Just ensure you call your bank and get all the information on the exchange rate, transaction rate and not so obvious fees etc. Also do not forget to inform them about your travel since, most credit card companies freeze the card when they see a transaction from a foreign land.

Prepaid Travel Cards:
---------------------

Prepaid travel cards have gained a lot of popularity due to its features and flexibility of usage. Several banks and financial institutions offer customised cards, in which you can load the amount with lock in currency rates. These cards can be used in select ATMs, used like a credit card while shopping and are secure with a password/ pin.

Debit Cards:
------------

Debit cards are for those who don’t have or use credit cards. Some banks don’t charge on ATM withdrawals from their bank’s ATM anywhere in the world, and levy heavy charges on other bank’s ATM withdrawals. Hence, speak to your bank, find out about all the fees involved and also check for the network of their ATMs in the destination country. Also check with them if your debit card can be used outside your home country.

Travellers Cheques:
-------------------

This is one of the oldest alternates to carrying cash. But with the newer kids on the block offering flexibility and safety, Travellers Cheque is slowly losing popularity. However, there are some institutions whose cheques are widely accepted and are usually commission-free. Enquire with couple of banks and foreign exchange houses and choose the best option available if you are interested in trying this old kid on the block.

There is no one right way to take all that cash that you are about to spend during your holiday. However, having said that, carrying all your holiday money by way of currency notes might not be the wisest and safest option. A combination of the above methods can be safe, convenient and also save you some bucks! Depending on your travel/holiday destination and time of your stay, you can have an assortment that suits you best.
