Do you have a basement or cellar in your home? Have you noticed the walls especially after a rainy season with water seeping in and huge damp marks in the wall? Did you think damp walls cannot be avoided in these places? Think again! Yes damp proofing is possible through a method known as basement tanking.
Basement tanking is a common method used to keep the water out of the structures below ground level. Even if the basement or cellars are not fully below the ground levels it can still have damp issues. This is because damp walls can also be caused even if the basement is built on the hill side or with earth against just one wall.
Basement tanking has various options to suit your need. One is to use an external system. This external system once applied to the outside of the structure, it forms a barrier which stops water from penetrating into the building. This method is only practical to be used when constructing a new basement or cellar. Special attention needs to be given to the floor and wall junction. External basement tanking can only be successful if the waterproof membrane barrier is available not only on the vertical surfaces but also underneath the concrete slabs. This will make the most effective waterproof tank for your basement or cellar. This not only keeps the building dry, but also uses the power of any water available to actually push the membrane onto the external walls of the structure.
Designers also use a technique known as a land drain adjacent to the floor and wall junction footing. As this is where the pressure of the water is at its greatest, the land drain efficiently diverts the water away from the structure.
Various other products are available in the market, through which basement tanking can even be done by you. Various paints and spray membrane liquids are available for easy application. Even though the application is easy various conditions require different attention and preparation to successfully complete basement tanking. Even one minor error can lead to a disastrous basement tanking job.
