Who would not like to be in one’s own command at all times? Each one of us always loves to be absolute charge of the self. According to ancient wisdom; the one in absolute command upon self is the emperor upon this planet. As one of the greatest seers of all times Guru Nanak Dev mentioned that ‘those who win over self; are winner of the entire world’. Whereas in actual, we all within ourselves experience a different factual state that exists within our lives.

Admittedly it is strongly affirmed that ‘restraint’ is the only procedure and manner of manifesting anything and everything in our lives. Whether it goes to succeed in academics, reduce weight, anger management, time management, emotional balance or else… they all allow access to any incumbent when it (incumbent) sincerely observes respective kind of ‘restraint’ corresponding to the ability under one’s pursuit; mandated to qualify as continual eligibility to succeed.
Now let us see what actually happens with most of us who vigorously give a kick start to any such campaign that whether eliminates any deficiency or develops our ability. Initially with all silent vehemence within one the restraint is imposed upon self without any room left for making any error or jumping with any scope of impunity.
But as the days pass; unnoticeably the unchecked boxes prescribed for all don’ts become automatically checked as our consent. The pertinent question is that who actually does it? How does it happen? Why do we notice it only when our deep resolve is broken into pieces?
Questions like these and many more questions that are alike need their respective answers… The ancient wisdom emphasises that all craving that insist and shatter our resolve of any kind primarily exist as hidden within our own existence. Hidden... yes all those enemies that need their elimination within us in order to allow our inner growth; intelligently hide themselves within our own existence and sit silently as an opportunist awaiting for their opportune moment to arise and attack at our most vulnerable point so that the structure of our resolve fall as any pack of play cards. Since during those initial stages when we initiate or undertake any kind of resolve that shall produce a favourable change to our abilities; generally, those moments are full of euphoric vehemence therefore the dust of its irrelevant celebration gives adequate hideouts to the warring enemies within our own self.
Any kind of craving that attempts to burst the embryo of our resolve shall initially try to embark through a sudden attack but when it shall find us standing with all vigil to ward off its attack then it shrewdly sneak to some corner in conceal and then initiate for its second attack in an unusual manner as a ‘ creeper’. For instance you have been yearning since several months to put a check upon your craving for sweets… be it chocolates, candies, ice creams or smoothers of all kind; the moment you sight any of the above named an irresistibility shall arise as a volcanic eruption and fructify its urge. You may or may not enjoy that defeat but the moments to follow shall fill your understanding with some weak regret. A dialogue within shall always transpire somewhat like this… ‘Enough is enough, strange I have no say to my own self… now I shall not become allured and fall prey to this craving towards the sweets’. But the force of volcanic eruption ignited by some old craving shall see to it that all your attempts in order to stall its move stand well thwarted.
The best clandestine strategy for any enemy in garb of a craving shall mount a silent attack as a creeper; you on a visit to some friend whose wife is a known name in entire friend circle for making excellent walnut cake covered with a think honey layer. And soon after the supper the hot fuming cake is placed amidst all dinners. The aroma is deadly and without even looking towards it… it (cake) finds its absolute access within your nose and thereby directly targeting your brain. The brain immediately registers the aroma and executes the general command of having the smelled one… but there is some resistance projected to that urge by the resolve to abstain from its consumption. You make a denial for the offer of having a pie of that irresistible piece of sweetly dressed flour. The wife of your friend wants to know through a burst of fire of questions one after another; you don’t like walnut cakes… or do you believe that I do not make a good one… are you on some strict doctor advice… are you on diet. Obviously your answer to all these questions shall be ‘NO’. You shy initially but then immediately you voice your restraint as a mode to gather some self control.
Your words are ridiculed with all decency and few more join to pressurize you to have some this time and maintain the restrain for some other occasions… you resist but then finding an attack from two ends namely; the mutiny by the brain chemistry and the external attack by formalism or etiquette. Meanwhile a piece of that inimical stuff (cake) is placed right before you and then with all probability you fall its prey without making even a single meaningful fire.
You may validate your defeat on various reasons such as… it looks very bad when everyone is insisting to that extent… I somehow could not voice my resolve… I don’t know but… but none of your excuse shall drag you in the conviction box… why? Because it is very difficult to colour one’s own self exclusively responsible for the defeat.
The victory is merely the realm for those who can vigorously reprimand their own self for any flaw consciously committed for any reason. Those who can meet the indecent one face or face mirror… indecent in light of insulting the dignity of their respective resolve shall be the ones that shall arise and come out as ultimate winners. Those who do not leave self with any fault that goes without being punished. Those who adjudicate self without any bias and pass its appropriate verdict; whereby they indict self and conclude with some punishment as a penance of some wise manner. Those who run away from such attribution and claim to take self through easy and comforting accommodation can certainly win on many pseudo humane grounds established by ice cream soldiers but victory shall always elude their comprehension.
