Dr. Robert Marinaro is the newest member of the Center for Dermatology team and is a board certified dermatologist that focuses is on general medical dermatology and cosmetic dermatology.Dr. Robert Marinaroshares more about himself and what's hot in dermatology in 2013.
Dr. Robert Marinaro: Sure, glad to. I'm a board certified dermatologist. I trained at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. I've been in private practice for 26 years. I do a lot of general medical dermatology and I do a lot of cosmetic dermatology.
Interviewer: What do you see? What type of procedures are the most popular?
Dr. Marinaro: The simple ones are the most popular, I think; doing neurotoxins like Botox and doing fillers like JUVEDERM. That's the standard practice. It is very popular and also very much in demand. There's a series of other simple procedures. When I look at cosmetics, I see people falling into two groups. The first group is people that need the facelift, they need their eyelids done, blepharoplasty and/or they need to have liposuction. These people have already designated themselves that "I need a big procedure and I'm going to set aside the time, the finances, and the resources to do so." Then there's the, "I want to feel good for the holidays," type of people. "I don't want to have bruising. I don't want to have a big procedure done." That is where the majority of people fall into, where they're not really, "Sign me up to have surgery today." Neurotoxins, as I said, like Botox. Fillers like JUVIDERM are very common. Back in New Jersey, which is a little bit unique, I did all of the laser resurfacing in my practice because physicians in New Jersey are the only ones that are allowed to do that so I did extensive laser resurfacing. Extensive photo-rejuvenation. A lot of hair removal by pulse light. Those are very, very common procedures. In terms of trends for now, the biggest trend's probably in skin tightening where, "Yes, I have wrinkles, but I feel like I should have the mini lift or the mini liposuction. But I don't want to have a lift and I don't want to have liposuction." That is the trend that's moving us today.
Interviewer: That's excellent. I know probably everyone's goal or most of them in the new year are going to work off that holiday fat. Body contouring seems to be a popular topic. Do you see that as something that's changing face? Is there new technology and things that you guys do at the Center for Dermatology that we should know about?
Dr. Marinaro: We do. Every hour and a half something is different. It somewhat is a little bit of a wild west world out there in terms of the exact instrumentation that's used for it and what the outcome will be with that instrument versus the next. Here at the Center for Dermatology, we have two different things, depending on body location and depending on what the patient's really looking to do. You're not going to be doing something like a skin tightening procedure on somebody that really needs an abdomnioplasty and take away redundant skin. That isn't going to work. But again, for the majority of people, they want to look younger. They want to look better. They want to look refreshed. The current job market is youth sells and if you look youthful you have a job, no matter what age. It is even economically driven in terms of the workplace.
Interviewer: Hmm. All this hiring without being discriminatory is too comon...we hear a lot about that. Before they wanted the old grey hairs around and now everyone wants to look younger. Apparently there's changes going on. I really appreciate your time and getting an introduction. Are there any parting words or thoughts that we should know about in this super hot multi billion dollar industry that just seems to be growing and growing? You've already got me excited about maybe I need to get rid of my dark lines under my eyes.
Dr. Marinaro: The most important thing, when it comes to any procedure, is to really know the person that you're talking to. Make sure that they're qualified to do what they, in fact, say that they can do. There are people out there that will not have any credibility or credentialing in order to and will still try to do these things. I think that one needs to be selective and careful and trust the provider that is doing it. Interviewer: That's right. There's no reversing those procedures. Once they're done, they're done, right or wrong.
Dr. Marinaro: Pretty much.
Interviewer: Well, hey. Thank you so much for your time, Dr. Marinaro. We look forward to hearing more on cosmetic tips and procedures that you will see through the next year and on and beyond.
Dr. Marinaro: I'm looking forward to it. Thank you so much for having me. Interviewer: Thank you.
