If you are looking at getting into a franchise then hopefully you have done some research about the franchise marketplace.
If you are looking at getting into a franchise then hopefully you have done some research about the franchise marketplace. Getting into a franchise is not much different from getting into your own business except for the fact that you will never own that franchise. It will still cost you money out of pocket and it will take some time to get up and running. This does not matter whether it’s low-cost franchises or a mid-market franchises.

There is no real dollar amount threshold that determines or defines low-cost franchises. If one were to propose a definition then it would be at some point below a mid-market franchise of a business that requires a significant investment and a lot of business attention like a national restaurant chain franchise or a large truck stop franchise. So at some level below that would be the low-cost franchises market. This might be a smaller regional or more local chain. It certainly would not be one of the very large international hotel franchises or a large national hospital franchise.

So if we have defined it as somewhere at a low market level, would you still invest a substantial amount of money to buy this franchise store or name? Just because a franchise is named a low-cost franchise, doesn’t mean you will not have to invest much money into it. Nor does it mean that the franchise is a bad deal either.

When you hear the phrase ‘low cost’ anything you should immediately think what kind of low cost. A low cost pair of shoes would most likely be cheaply made. If you carry this analogy to a low-cost franchise, then you may surmise the support systems behind the franchise will also be lower cost to non-existent. This is not a negative quality but you need to be aware that you may have to learn about the franchise business on you own or by reading manuals. A low cost franchise may provide little training as training does cost a lot of money and time. To train a lot of people is a major time investment, especially considering the turn over rate of new employees at any business.

Since no franchise can give you a guarantee of future earnings or any warranties about the business you will have to trust your own business acumen in addition to relying on some professionals. You would need to get some input from an accountant and an attorney to read any disclosure documents you may receive.

Yes, you will get future projections and past earnings performance. But it will be up to you to gather all of this information and analyze it to see if you, as the franchisee, can make some money also. You may really luck into a business that you rally enjoy and find you can make money at. But remember as with any franchise you have to pay royalties and other periodic payments. So do pay attention to the particulars. A low-cost franchise may indeed by for you.
