What Next After the NEBOSH General Certificate?

Article looking at the various options available to a person wishing to further their health and safety knowledge after obtaining the NEBOSH General Certificate.
The NEBOSH General Certificate qualification, as the name suggests, provides a good level of general information regarding many different areas of health and safety. After successfully completing it, many delegates go on to take the NEBOSH Construction Certificate or the NEBOSH Fire Certificate, which concentrate specifically on construction site health and safety or fire respectively. The NEBOSH Environmental Certificate is another option, which is intended to be taken by managers, supervisors and any other employees who are responsible for managing environmental issues at their workplace.

The NGC1 unit (the first week of the NEBOSH General Certificate course) is a required unit for the Construction and Fire Certificate courses, so those who have already achieved the General Certificate within the last 5 years will not need to repeat this when going on to do the Construction and Fire Certificates.

Whilst some training providers may only offer the full NEBOSH Construction Certificate and NEBOSH Fire Certificate courses, forcing you to have to sit through a week of learning the NGC1 unit that you've already done (and charging you for the privilege!), some offer 'Conversion Courses' for those who have already done the NEBOSH General Certificate and obtained the NGC1 unit, and just need to do the extra units necessary to obtain the NEBOSH Construction or Fire Certificates. Not only does this save you a week in terms of time, but the conversion courses are also hundreds of pounds cheaper than the 'Full Courses'.

Another option is to do a health and safety NVQ. Unlike qualifications that rely on teaching and examinations, a health and safety NVQ uses performance on the job as a basis for assessment, and recognises the competence of a person in a work situation. These highly-respected health and safety qualifications are workplace project-based, involving the collection of evidence from your normal day to day activities, so candidates must be in a role that allows them to provide this. NVQs avoid the need to attend hours and hours of classroom teaching, and are a much cheaper option than something like the NEBOSH Diploma which require many hours of classroom-based study and can cost around £7,000 from some training providers!
