Starting from the unskilled recruits under the group C and D categories where people are working in the field and in the maintenance sections, there are the officer posts in the Group A and B, who are responsible for the decision making and supervisory roles. Some of the common postings that are seen in the railways are in engineering, police, managers, doctors, and the lower group employees. Office staffs, station masters, and other people are present in each and every station. The ticket checkers are also an important constituent of the Indian railways. This is also a sector where many people are given jobs because of their sporting capabilities and such achievements. The group A and B recruitment is carried out by the UPSC while the employees of group C and D are recruited by the railway recruitment board of the said region.
Stability and pay – If the factor of pay scales and perks are to be considered to rate a particular sector in India for employability, then the Indian railways will perhaps be in the top categories. This being a central government organisation, the pay is quite high and comparable to the best paying industries in India. People are also attracted for railways because of the stable jobs and also because the recruits would rise up the ladder of postings gradually by the dint of promotions. Like any other government jobs, the employees posted permanently have many other perks such as gratuity, provident fund, LTC, pension, etc.
