The alignment of the shaft is done to avoid any of the damages that might be caused due to the alteration in the center of gravity of the machine. The motor which is generally the machine must be in equilibrium with all the components and also with the ground. For this condition to get achieved the shaft which is considered to be the integral part of the set up must be aligned in a proper manner. Here we can discuss in detail about the purpose of aligning the shaft and the method to align the shaft.

There is the imaginary line called as the center line of the machinery which is being driven by the shaft. There is also another line which is called as the center line of the motor rotor shaft. There must be the exact coincidence of both these lines which will make the condition for shaft alignment good. There is always the presence of vibration during the running of the machine. The shaft alignment process will make sure that the machine runs with the minimum amount of vibration. There are two alignments that need to be checked before the running of the machine. They are the Offset Alignment and the angular alignment. But in order to get these shaft alignments in the right place the shaft must not be crooked or bent at any stage.

The offset alignment of the shaft is also called as the radial alignment. This shaft alignment can be checked by using the straight edge ruler. There are the coupling halves that are present at the top and bottom of the shaft. By placing this instrument at the coupling halves and noticing for any gaps the check for shaft alignment can be made. If any gap is found at the coupling halves then there needs to be an adjustment that ought to be made.

For checking the angular alignment of the haft one can use the feeler gauge. By keeping this instrument at the coupling halves faces and then by rotating them we can check for the angular alignments. There are 4 points at the shaft coupling that needs to be checked. There are two ways to correct if any misalignment. One is the shimming process and other is the shifting of machinery process. Thus when the above two shaft alignments are made good then there will be the smooth running of the machine without any sorts of vibration.
