The OCI is a status scheme that is available to a non-native of India who comes from a family i.e. parents or grandparents, of Indian citizenship. Since the Indian government does not allow dual citizenship, this is an alternative for traveling to India under a foreign citizenship. Under this scheme, there are several benefits that the individual can avail once he or she has registered. Keeping all the details in mind, we help give you a detailed process that can be followed for an Indian OCI application:
Phase 1: Registration process
The application process for the OCI card for India can be easily done online. All one has to do is log into the official website and submit the necessary details which include the applicant’s details and the parent’s or grandparent’s details. Details of the passport and other relevant information will also be needed to be submitted. The form will then have to be downloaded. There are two parts, namely, Part A and part B. Part A can be filled online and for the whole family, whereas Part B will have to be downloaded and filled handwritten.
Phase2: Documents required for the Indian OCI application process
Like any other travel permits, a standard set of documents must be submitted. The following certificated papers are required as per the requirements of the OCI card for India.
o Proof of current citizenship
o Evidence of current/parents/grandparents citizenship
o Proof of relationship with the applicant
o Photocopy of the applicants passport
o Two photographs that satisfies the necessary requirements
Phase 3: Document submission
Before submitting the documents and the application form, an appointment must be taken. If the applicant is abroad, he must visit the appropriate centre as mentioned in the official website. If the applicant is residing in India, there are certain centers within the country where the application can be submitted. A demand draft with the right payment will also be needed to be submitted as part of the application for the OCI card for India. It is crucial to understand that individuals who are applying for the first time and individuals who already have a PIO and converting to an OCI will have different fee values.
Phase 4: tracking
Normally, the applicant can track the status of the Indian OCI application online. All he has to do is submit details of his passport, the online registration number and the file acknowledgement number. Normally the verification and approval process takes around several weeks, where the acknowledgement is registered within the first 20 days of submission and then processed. It is then verified in the next 30 days. Once the document has been verified, the applicant can collect it at the centre where applied. A registration certificate in the form of a booklet will be issued along with the “U” like sticker in the passport.
