If you are struggling with the concept, do research, speak with franchise owners and business owners. You can also talk about costs and benefits and if they prefer that option; this can go a long way in helping you make the best decision.

One thing with which I always struggled was creating an idea. If someone had given me a goal or objective to achieve, I could always do it victoriously. If someone asked me to create an idea from scratch, I used to take certain time for conceiving the perception and checking it thoroughly.
That’s one of the things that attracted me to the concept of franchising. In my franchise consulting practice, it’s very common for people to ask about the benefits of buying a system or starting off on your own. If you find the concept of starting a business with an exciting idea and a solid plan to execute it, perhaps franchising is not the best option.
But, what if you are somewhat like me… and need help or guidance? That is were franchising can be a more attractive option…
But, you still need to be careful…
One of the most common misconceptions is that franchising involves lesser risk than starting your own business. In certain cases, it is better to be true, but I would not necessarily make that assumption, nor have it, when the reason is to select a franchise over starting your own business. I have had many conversations with franchise consulting firms, attorneys and brokers on this subject. Is franchising less risky? Is it a better option?
I think that everything can be categorized to two things. Firstly, it is the quality of the franchise system and goals. Secondly, it is the objectives of the person that owns and operates the business.
If you look back to my first paragraph, I discussed about my personal struggle in creating the idea… To me, that is the hardest part of the equation in starting the business. First you have the idea. Then, you have to carry out your research. After that, it is the task of creating the business plan followed by creating all of your systems, advertising, marketing, etc… There are some people, who have that ability, and more importantly, enjoy the concept of starting their own business. As a franchise consultant and broker, I am compensated by selling franchises. I often gain reach out to people, who prefer the independent route... If that is the case, it is better suited for them because this is what they want to do.
In many cases, however, the people who cannot create the concept from scratch; but have the ability to run a system, franchise ownership can be a smart option. There are a number of benefits in a franchise system. One of which is the fact that you do not have to go through the process of creating the business. Though all systems might not work; but, there are many that do. If you happen to find a franchise and are comfortable with the model or believe that you would be successful with it; then, it will be quite better than starting your own business.
Numerous people tend to believe that, since I have a franchise consulting and brokerage practice, I am biased towards franchising. While I enjoy working in this industry and believe it can be a great opportunity, it all comes down to the system that does it work or is it a suitable option for you. If you are struggling with the concept, do research, speak with franchise owners and business owners. You can also talk about costs and benefits and if they prefer that option; this can go a long way in helping you make the best decision.
