The Cotswolds are a part of England that seems to have just stopped time, and apart from the various temporal giveaways such as mobile phones and cars it will feel as if you have stepped into the past. The stunning rural hills and the ancient villages, mostly constructed from stone, will make you feel as if you are back in a simpler time. For several decades the area has been regarded as a place of outstanding natural beauty and those who come to the area see it as one of the most beautiful parts in all of England.
Cotswold towns are definitely one of the main reasons people visit the area, there history runs deep and goes back for hundreds of years. The villages in the region seem to blend perfectly with the spectacular surrounding scenery and the residents of the region seem to enjoy a relaxed and un-hassled lifestyle. If you have flown into England through London, Cotswold towns will seem about as far away from the capital city as you could imagine.
Cheltenham is the biggest of all the Cotswold towns and has a history dating back to the early 18th century. To say Cheltenham would be an immensely popular tourist town would be an understatement. The area has been attracting people for a very long time and accommodation is scarce, if not impossible to find.
As a general rule, if you're looking to stay in Cheltenham then you're going to have to book accommodation around a year in advance if you want to have any choice. People who want to come to Cheltenham last minute are generally disappointed and end up staying a very long way outside of the town.
There are a great many attractions in Cheltenham and if you are visiting the town then you must check out the Pittville Pump Room which will give you an idea of the history of the town. You can also visit the birthplace of Gustave Holtz and it would be well worth seeing a production at the Everyman Playhouse. One of the more simple pleasures of Cheltenham is its sheer beauty and in many ways it is unnecessary to plan activities here and you can simply sit back, relax, and just enjoy the experience of being in the spectacular part of England.
The Cotswolds are also famous for their market towns and if you want to visit a very popular one of these then make your way to Chipping Norton. This is a town that is one of the first you come across when entering the region from the East and is well worth seeing if you want to visit a typical historic market town.
Gloucester is not technically a town, but a city, due to the spectacular cathedral located in it. If you are visiting the Cotswolds then it is well worth visiting Gloucester, partly for its spectacular cathedral but also because it has many other wonderful attractions including several museums and not to mention the wonderful surrounding scenery.
