There are a growing number of cases involving male breast enlargement, believed to be caused by a condition called gynecomastia or rapid weight gain.

Male breast enlargement may be classified in two types. One is having excess fatty tissues, most often caused by weight gain and puberty related metabolic body changes. Second is gynecomastia, an abnormal development of large mammary glands in males producing firm breast tissues in one or a pair of breasts directly under the nipple. In adolescents, the condition may often be a source of distress, but for the majority of adolescents whose gynecomastia is not due to obesity, the breast enlargement shrink or disappear within a two years.

Male breast enlargement from a cause of common gynecomastia remains unknown, but it can be associated with hormonal imbalance or the tissue responsiveness to them, an imbalance of estrogenic and androgenic effects on the breast, resulting to an unopposed estrogen action in the breast tissue. The breast tissue which appears underneath the nipple area, caused by gynecomastia is usually visible one and a half inches across. The excess fatty tissue growth on the other hand has no size limit as growth in weight and volume depends on the overall body weight gain.

Patients should discuss with their doctors about revising any medication. Often, an alternative medicine to breast enlargement can be available that can prevent further imbalance. A consultation with an endocrinologist may help during the first 3 years of abnormality occurrence. After this window, however, the breast tissue may remain and harden. When this happens, surgery is the only treatment option.

Gynecomastia is not physically harmful, but in some cases may indicate other diseases like testicular cancer. Growing glandular tissue in breast enlargement is often tender or painful. Weight loss can alter the condition in cases where it is triggered by obesity, but losing weight will not reduce the glandular component and patients cannot target areas for weight loss.

This condition is an uncomfortable and embarrassing predicament for men and boys alike. Preventive measures can be done in early detection by doing regular exercises and adopting a balanced diet. This may reduce breast enlargement which to date causes are still unknown. Under dire circumstances when natural preventive measures do not work, surgical treatment of male breast enlargement could be the last resort either through skin sculpture, liposuction, reduction mammoplasty, gland excision or a combination of these surgical techniques.
