Where else on the world do you find the beaches and the nightlife that Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has to offer? The city has some of the most breathtaking sceneries in the world and a great weather throughout the entire year. There is more to Rio besides the weather, nightlife, carnival and so on. March is no exception to this rule as there are many things happening in the city.
Feira do Rio Antigo is an event organized every month in the city and in March you will have the possibility to attend it on the 5th of the month. What goes on you ask? The Rua do Lavradio transforms into an antique market where you have the possibility to browse through around 100 bars and the restaurants over there extend their tables and chairs onto the pavement. The event will be organized between 10 AM and 6 PM at the Rua do Lavradio.
The next day you can go to the Feira Hippie (Hippie market) which is organized every Sunday at the Praca General Osorio in Ipanema. The tradition started back in 1968 and here you will find a good source for some great paintings, jewelry, toys, handicrafts, clothes, musical instruments and even furniture although I can’t imagine a tourist buying an armoire.
The Oi Vert Jam (Rio Skate Jam) is an annual event organized in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and here men in long shorts wow the crowds with their cool tricks. This special event is organized at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas.
If it’s March, it means that the famous Carnival is organized. Between 5 and 8th of the month the entire city will turn into a giant sambadrome. Considered to be the benchmark against other carnivals, this one is manages to release energy and a spirit all over the city and both citizens and tourists do the samba for four magical days.
To prepare this event, they plan ahead for several months. The number of tourists that come to Rio for the Carnival reaches a staggering number of 300,000 annually. If you are a backpacker or if money is tight at the moment, you should know that there is an “alternative” carnival in the Lapa district which is located in the southern corner of Rio’s center. In front of the Lapa aqueduct a stage is erected and bands of various styles play every night.
Don’t forget about Rio’s Carnival Balls which are organized in the same period, but the most important ones are Friday, Saturday and Tuesday. If you are interested, the most formal is organized on Saturday at the famous Copacabana Palace which is considered to be an institution for Rio socialites. If you are looking for the most glitzy ball you should go to the gala ball organized at the Scala on Tuesday in Leblon. Here the costumes are as exotic as they can get and the entire affair is broadcasted on TV.
There are also many carnival balls organized along the Copacabana beach every day for basically everybody. However, ask which of them are safe because some can be quite rough.
