There are many different types of reconstructive plastic surgery. Reconstructive surgery corrects structural abnormalities and disfigurements.
If you know what the different reconstructive plastic surgery procedures offered are, you may be able to guide a person who has suffered from a disfiguring accident, has developed an abnormal structure or has a congenital defect. You may even find the information useful for yourself in future. This kind of surgery can restore or correct form and function. The good news is that it is usually covered by the majority of health insurance policies.

Types of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery

• Cleft Lip and Palate Repair – A cleft lip is a separation or split in the upper lip. A cleft palate is a separation in the upper roof of the mouth. Nasal Alveolar Molding (NAM) is an advanced method of correcting this condition. NAM is a passive technique that brings the lip and gum together by redirecting the forces of natural development. The procedure changes the position and restores the normal anatomic alignment of the infant’s alveolar ridges. Its benefits include more precise repair, and a more natural looking nose.

• Reconstructive Breast Surgery – This procedure is beneficial for women whose breasts have not developed properly, who have had a mastectomy, or who have a congenital absence of breasts. There are two methods of reconstruction, one using a DIEP flap, and the other using implants. The DIEP flap technique uses a flap of tissue from the lower abdomen containing DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforators) blood vessels along with the fat and skin connected to them, which is transferred to the chest region. Reconstruction with implants is done with breast implants and tissue expanders.

• Ear Reconstruction for Microtia – Microtia is a disorder in which the outer ear or pinna does not fully develop. An important reconstructive plastic surgery technique used to correct this condition is Rib Cartilage Graft Reconstruction. The procedure uses cartilage from the child’s ribs to form the ear, and the projection and fold behind it.

• Craniosynostosis Treatment – Craniosynostosis is early closing of the sutures which separate different plates of bone that form the skull. Premature suture closing hampers normal growth of the skull and brain and prevents a symmetrical and normal appearance. Surgical interventions such as removal of the suture, remodeling of the forehead, and early fronto-orbital advancement surgery may be done to correct the patient’s specific condition.

• Orthognathic Surgery – People who have misaligned teeth and jaws, or who find it difficult to close their lips at rest, can benefit from corrective jaw surgery or orthognathic surgery. Surgery gets the jaws into the correct position through the use of orthodontic braces and plaster models, and by the orthodontist’s manipulations.

• Brachial Plexus Injury Treatment – Nerve grafting and nerve transfers are some of the reconstructive plastic surgery techniques used to correct Brachial Plexus Injury. The condition occurs because of damage to the intricate system of nerves branching from the spine to the forearm and shoulder. Symptoms of the disorder include joint stiffness, muscle weakness, and burning pain.

• Surgical Correction of Obstructive Sleep Apnea – OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) is a condition characterized by obstruction of the upper airway that causes repeated pauses in breathing while the person is asleep despite him making efforts to breathe. Surgical correction addresses the essential anatomic reason behind airway obstruction during the night.

• Mandibular Distraction – It is reconstructive surgery done to correct Micrognathia which is a condition of having an unnaturally small jaw. Mandibular distraction helps to increase the size of the jaw bone by using a jaw distraction device to pull the bones and soft tissues apart till the desired projection is reached.
