Australian wine has gained international recognition for its superb quality and value. Australia is considered one of the top 10 wine-producing countries in the world and Western Australian produces some of the highest quality red, white and sparkling wines and has 100’s of wineries. This part of the country is divided into six different wine-making regions; Coastal, Great Southern, Margaret River, Pemberton, Perth Hills and the Swan Valley. Wine festivals are a part of life here and draw many visitors yearly, eager for a taste of Australia’s special wine.

Swan Valley, perhaps the best known wine region, was established by Thomas Waters in 1829. A 30 minute drive from Perth, the Swan Valley is also known as “Perth’s Valley of Taste”. Swan Valley Food and Wine Trail is a 34 kilometre scenic wine trail which visitors can enjoy while taking in the local attractions which consist of numerous restaurants, wineries and even fresh produce. Swan Valley is famous for producing the highest quality Shiraz and Verdelho varieties. Due to the unique conditions in this region these varieties are rarely produced outside of Western Australia.

The Great Southern Region is the largest wine region in all of Australia and produces approximately 37% of wine grapes used in Western Australia. The falling apple industry in 1950 gave birth to the wine grape industry in the Great Southern Region. The government worked with wine experts to find the most suitable soil in which grapes can grow and met with success. The Great Southern Region consists of five sub-regions and therefore has a variety of soils which provides Western Australia with unique and various wines. The Great Southern Region is a top tourist destination, in which visitors can find pleasure in exploring the beautiful scenic routes, rich wildlife and more.

Margaret River is a town located in Western Australia next to the Margaret River, a small river after which the town was named. Margaret River is famous tourist attraction not only for their caves, and natural beaut, but for the high quality wine it produces. There are over 5,500 hectares of land in this region dedicated to producing wine and well over 100 wineries. It is considered a superior region due to its Mediterranean like climate making it a favorable land for grapes to grow on. Margaret River also offers visitors the chance to enjoy spotless beaches, surf and take pleasure in a world class meal at one of their pristine wineries.
