Customers rely on text to understand your message and find out more about your product, since they are unable to see it in person and talk to sales personnel about it. It is extremely important to write clear, concise descriptive text.
One of the most difficult parts of creating your e-commerce website is producing quality content - particularly text and descriptions. Search engines use your text to index your site, determining how many people find it. Customers rely on text to understand your message and find out more about your product, since they are unable to see it in person and talk to sales personnel about it. It is extremely important to write clear, concise descriptive text in order to answer all the questions your customers might have. When writing your content, keep the following tips in mind.

Identify your target audience and develop a consistent, straightforward tone. Knowing who you're writing for will help you market your product successfully. Not only will it help you develop your tone, but it will also help you when it comes to your diction. For example, if a product or service is aimed at people working in the technology industry, then it's appropriate to use technical jargon; however, if it's aimed at the general public, then you have to be more careful to write your description so everyone can understand why they should buy it. Whatever you choose to do, make sure that you maintain the same tone and level of language throughout. Otherwise, your writing reads sloppily and makes it look like you don't know what you're talking about.

Describe the features and their benefits. It's not enough to simply list a product's features. Even if people understand why you included them, it's not nearly as effective as laying it out in plain black and white. Describing the benefits of each feature will point out things that potential customers might not have considered. Not only does it make the customer think that he might need the product after all, but it also makes you come across as confident and knowledgeable.

Be straightforward and avoid 'happy talk.' When writing your description, don't beat around the bush or add filler. 'Happy talk' is a term used to describe passages filled with praise and positivity of a product or a site, but does not have any actual substance or meaning. If you have good things to say about a product but can't think of why it's good or how it accomplishes the things you claim, then you should leave it out. Get straight to the point and remember to tell customers how the product will benefit them.

Write descriptions exclusively for your website. Although you might be tempted to take the easy way out and use the manufacturer's description or snag a description off someone else's site, don't. Descriptions are a prime opportunity to make your site stand out and to better optimize your site for search engines. If you use a generic description, then hundreds of other sites who sell the same (or similar) product will have the same description and search results. When writing your own descriptions, be clear and concise, but stuff in as many keywords as you can while still being smooth and readable. If you just sit down and write it, it should happen naturally.

Sometimes writing content can be difficult, and it's not a crime to go look at other sites for ideas, examples, and inspiration. However, you should be able to translate it into your own words and make it relevant to your own products. For additional assistance, you can always talk to an e-commerce provider, like Infigra E-commerce, about writing your content.
