Hindu
The wedding day is the most important day in the life of a bride or a groom, and every effort is made to make this occasion truly memorable. A Hindu bride from Kerala wears a jewellery set and a sari. Kanchipuram saris are considered as the finest sari in Kerala, and are the favourite of all women. Brides from Kerala wear Kanchipuram sari on their wedding day in Kerala Matrimony. The colours, which are generally preferred by the brides, are usually in the shades of red, fuchsia pink, maroon, magenta, peach, orange etc. Gold coloured saris are also very popular, however, black and white are banned for bridal wear.
A Kanchipuram sari is made up of silk and the borders have Zari. The zari makes the sari look very beautiful and heavy. Sometimes gold threads are used to weave the border design of the Kanchipuram saris.
The wedding attire of a Hindu groom from Kerala includes a white mundu with a kasavu border and a silk jubba. People from Kerala are very fond of jewellery and consider it as an asset. The brides wear very heavy jewellery on their wedding day. Such jewelleries amount for several lakhs, and are considered as streedhan.
Christian
Kerala has the maximum population of Christians in India. The wedding among Christians is completely different from that of Hindus and Muslims. The bridal attire worn by the Christian brides is generally white in colour, and the brides dress either white or ivory sari or gown. The face of the bride is covered with transparent veils, which symbolizes purity. These days, brides love to create style statement with the bridal dress, and are wearing designer gowns for their wedding.
However, some of the brides also wear Kanchipuram saris and keep their heads covered whit the white veil. The Christian brides wear peal or diamond jewelley mostly, as they complement the white or ivory dresses very nicely.
Muslim
Similar to the Muslims all over India, a Muslim marriage in Kerala is also a contract between the bride and the groom. The wedding celebration in Muslims is known as "nikaah", which is the ritual of contract, following the Islamic guidelines. The Muslim weddings in Kerala are also lavish. The Muslim brides in Kerala wear bright colored silk saris for their wedding. In some places, the brides wear lehenga or sharara, which are the traditional attire for Muslim brides all over India, and are the legacy of the Mughal era.
The brides cover their head with heavy embellished dupatta, which adds to the beauty of the bride. The dupatta is generally made up of a flimsy material, and is heavily designed with zari, embroidery, Zardozi, sequins, mirror work, patchwork, pearls or kundan. Golden laces or tassels are attached to the ends of the dupatta to make it heavy and embellished.
With the latest and changing trends, the bride and grooms in Kerala are also adopting designer wear in their wedding trousseau, along with a traditional touch.
