When I first started working within the creative industry I was often taught that the customer was always right, largely because they were footing the bill. However, as time has progressed, I’ve realised that the client who consistently gets their own way may not be the client who you get return business from.

This is largely because a clients field of expertise is not normally web development, which is why they’ve came to see you in the first instance! Clients who get their own way are not necessarily getting the most effective solution for their business needs, & ultimately, a website should be built upon a sound business case rather than a fanciful flight. The later is a waste of everyone’s time.

Whilst offering web development in Leeds, I started to take a more holistic approach to web design and no longer promoted the “client is always right” ethos.

Instead, I feel an approach which promotes best practise is preferable, and as such I advise on how a client can achieve their strategic business goals using the internet.
More often than not, due to not understanding technology, clients can be unaware of how technology should be used effectively, which means the design they had in their head is not necessarily the best solution in practise.

Ecommerce development often proves to be a good example of this, as requests for outlandish features supersede the websites basic function, which is to sell goods.
Another area, which, for small businesses at least, can be perceived as wasteful is the development of animations. On numerous occasions I’ve had requests for animations for a client’s site, even though the website itself was receiving few visitors!

Maybe before investing in expensive 3D animations you should ensure you’ve got an audience who will not only view it but react on it!

On the whole, when it comes to developing a website, the best advice for a client is that they have a clear idea in their head as to what the websites goals are. The goals are more important than any vision of aesthetics, as a beautiful site that fails to achieve its goals is simply a beautiful failure!

Due to this, BC Media designs websites which, by default have a rich feature set designed to take advantage of modern marketing methods, such as Search Engine Optimisation, Pay Per Click, Web 2.0 technologies & rich media. This means our solutions can integrate into our clients business model in ways even they did not anticipate!

So, when talking to your web consultant, remember to listen to the advice they give. If they are your chosen expert then spare a minute to listen to their advice. They could make you company a better business!
