Are the algae in your pond becoming more problematic? There are various ways on how to eliminate these plant-like organisms. However, do not expect to kill all the algae and prevent them from coming back in your pond. As long as there is water, there will always be algae. They microscopic organisms usually grow in develop in groups thus the green froth at the bottom of your pond and on the sides as well.
Algae are just like plants. They are living organisms that obtain energy from the sun through photosynthesis that is carried out. It is believed that other kinds of plants evolved from algae because of the similarities they have. The algae however, don’t have the organs that higher plants have. They are also different in their cellular components. Algae can either be unicellular or multicellular. They can form in huge groups and blooms.
Just like any other living thing on earth, algae are also a valuable part of the ecosystem where they are. But they can at the same time be a cause of problems for the people who keep water systems like aquariums, swimming pools and ponds. How to fight and totally eliminate algae has become a serious dilemma for aquarists. However, it is impossible for them to be completely eliminated since they co-exist with other plants in the water. As long as there are plants and fish in the water, there will be algae. And as long as there is sunlight, algae will continue to reproduce in your water system.
The most common target of algae to flourish freely is a pond. Due to the nature of this water system, algae can easily grow and multiply without the owner noticing them. They prosper the most in areas where the sunlight and nutrients are abundant. Areas like ponds are their favourites.
There are a number of ways in which pond algae can be controlled. But usually, it is better to use a few methods altogether to make the combat more effective. As mentioned before, algae get their energy to survive from the sunlight and the nutrients in the water. So a good way to combat them is by limiting the amount of light and nutrients in the water. Another good way to control pond algae is to get to know a few algae eating organisms and introduce them to your pond. Algaecides can also be one of the options. However, if you choose to massively kill all the algae in the pond, the quality of the water in it will go to a devastating low level. This will also result to the death of your pond creatures because without the algae, the oxygen level in the water will deplete.
Algaecides alone cannot be used to reduce the amount of algae in your pond. On the other hand, you can combine it with the other ways mentioned above.
There are actually a few other ways to combat algae growth in pond waters. However, these are the most effective and the most possible ones. Just keep in mind that algae will never completely go out of sight.
