Wayanad is located in the northeast part of Kerala. It is a new town that emerged recently in 1980.
Wayanad is located in the northeast part of Kerala. It is a new town that emerged recently in 1980. A place rich in flora and fauna, a large part of Wayanad is covered with coffee. The forest of Wayanad is covered with several species of wild type rosewood, artocarpus, caussia et cetera. The world’s longest venomous snake King Cobra is also found in Wayanad. The town of Wayanad came under the Pazhassi Rajas of the Kottayam Dynasty during ancient times. Tipu Sultan conquered this area but had to hand it to the British after the Sreerangapattanam truce. This resulted in a series of continuous warfare between the British and the Kottayam princes and resulted in the British gaining full control of the area. They started tea cultivation on the plateau and also greatly improved the infrastructure of the town by laying roads which enabled people to migrate from Mysore and other nearby areas. There is a land not far from Calicut, the city of Zamorins, yet a world apart from Kerala's agricultural and industrial epicentres. It is a quiet place where scenic beauty, wild life and traditions matter, simplicity is a virtue and beauty still blossoms from the mountainous horizon and from the green glaze of alluring vegetation. The population of Wayanad is quite diverse with Muslims, Hindus, Jains, Christians and tribal all living together in peaceful harmony providing credibility to the nation’s motto of ‘unity in diversity. Waynad enjoys a fairly pleasant climate throughout the year with optimum rainfalls during the southwest and northeast monsoon. Forceful high speed winds can be observed during the southwest monsoon and dry winds blow through the plains and valleys during winter.The humidity of the region is quite high and peaks during the southwest monsoon. Today Wayanad is a popular tourist destination in Kerala with numerous attractions such as Chembra Peak, Edakkal Cave, Kuruva Island and Lakkidi, which is the highest point in Wayanad.

Places to see:

Banasura Sagar Dam: The most expansive earth dam in the entire country is the dam built at Wayanad called the Banasura Sagar Dam. The filling of the dam with water leads to the creation of a number of small islands. One of the most beautiful sights for people who go to this region is to see these small islands in the foreground to the Banasura Hill.

Edakkal Caves: Situated on Ambukuthi Hills, Edakkal caves are 10 kilometers from Sultanbathery, in Wayanad district Formed by a large split in a huge rock, the two natural rock formations represent the world's richest pictographic gallery of its kind.

Kuruva Island: Within the tributaries of the Kabani River that flows towards the east is an island that has all the elements of an evergreen forest. This is the Kuruva Island, which spreads over an area of nine hundred and fifty acres. The place being uninhabited because of its distance from the modern world, is a great location for a picnic, and also to see certain wonders of nature, undisturbed by human intervention. The place is especially well known for the rare species of birds, animals, and animal life.

Thusharagiri Waterfalls: The highest waterfall is the Thenpara that falls from an altitude of 75 metres. Situated at Kodencherry in Kozhikode district, the plantation destination that abounds in rubber, arecanut, pepper, ginger and spices is also a trekker's delight.

Thirunelly temple: 32 km northeast of mananthavady: surrounded by kambamala, karimala and varadiga, the thirunelly temple is a marvel temple architecture. The shrine is shielded with 30 granite columns and the ground is paved with huge square pieces of granite. The crystal clear waters of the papanasini river running downhill add to the enchantment of the place.

How to reach:

Air:The nearest airport is in Kozhikode and is located at a distance of 100 kilometers from Wayanad.

Rail: The district is well connected by a railway network.

Road: well connected by road from Kozhikode (Calicut), Kannur, Ooty and Mysore.
